Oh. and I love Marten's casual acceptance of his pantslessness. That seems a "new marten" kind of thing...or have we ever seen Marten in the throes of Sleep Madness?

Interlude got it in his post above-Marten has the least going on of all the characters, but complains about his life the most. I'm sure we all know people like that in real life, and generally don't like them much. Indeed, a lot of the interplay of the comic tends to be Marten getting verbally (and sometimes physically!) Gibbs-slapped when he complains about his life. It seems unsympathetic of his friends, but most of them probably think he's entirely too whiny for his own good.

OK, so first time poster, long timer lurker, yadda yadda...
Just once I'd like to read that reversely said by someone.

[ ... ]
Lots of different ways it could go, if Dora gets more involved in the ongoing plot. Or not, if it's just a one-off.
I agree that Dora kind of feels like a meddler/manipulater type, but she never seems to do anything like that.
[ ... ]
Hm... the VERY early storielines come to mind. I've always had the feeling she kinda navigated Faye and Marten into finally talking about things between them in the open. I can't shake the feeling there were ulterior motives for her back then.

And whether she knows it or not, being the owner of CoD does grant her a LOT of social controll power. Not in a direct sense in that she could use her position of employer of a large group of a given social circle to make them do anything against their will... but she can indirectly affect a lot of emotional stuff thats going on inside "her den", so to speak.

@Interlude:
I see. Very interesting. So moping DOES make people interested in your shitty life. Good to know. :-D
(That Scrubs episode comes to mind where even JD realizes how annoying his mopy emotionality must be for his friends and decides to finally get out of his rut... GO MARTEN EPIPHANY No.3!!!)

New Comic:

Well, that kinda sorts out Elliot's view of things (and disappoints/relieves half of the forum, I guess).

I wonder if Jeph has a canonical view of the spelling of Elliot's name; he has also used Elliott in a number of comics.

Who starts a high five with a clenched fist?

I think Elliot knows what's going on, and this is his way of telling Marten that he's OK with it.

Whow.

Elliot just gained at least +10 upgrades of coolness.

Not many people would highfive a person that got the girl they themselves wanted, days after that girl rejected them.

In my interpretation, panel 3 shows what Marten expects to happen, not what is actually happening.

Poor cringing Marten.

Cringing Marten sounds like the name of a bird.

"The Cringing Marten is commonly found in the Northeastern United States.  It is an onnivore, favouring a wide variety of foodstuffs.  Its plumage is subdued, ranging from brown to a light blue-grey."

Must be the cynic in me because I thought something similar. I hope we are both wrong. I'd hate to see Padma's character used that way. I'm not holding a double standard, but with Sven, you knew what you were getting from the beginning. Maybe Ellliott has moved on and actually found someone new now that he isn't holding an torch for Padma.

Am I the first one to think that the reason Elliott is high-fiving is because he is only aware Padma is staying longer, which means Elliott thinks he may have a chance of some sort? Or am I just too accepting of the application of Murphy's Law?

This doesn't seem at all to be Elliot's character.

Actually, the forum assumptions I've seen people make during this arc really give me the feeling that a lot of the forum thinks the QC is composed of terrible, terrible people.

* Dora isn't going to go psycho and/or start manipulating people behind Marten's back. That's not her nature.
* Elliot isn't going to go start pummelling people left and right.
* And then there's that guy who's saying he fully expects Padma to ditch Marten with a "You wanna be with me? You?  Dude, you have no prospects. You're floating through life. And that's just not attractive for the long term. It was fun. See ya."? When have we ever seen any indication of Padma being so monstrous?

Come on, people. We aren't dealing with a cast of Mengeles here. Give Jeph SOME credit for creating characters with enough humanity in them to actually think about each other.

I think it waspretty well established in here that there wouldn't be Marten poundings from Elliott when he found out.  it would be more like foetal sobbing in the corner.

Which is why I tend to like the interpretation that he's high-fiving Marten convincing Padma to stay a bit longer - incomplete information on Elliott's part makes for more drama chances and funnier hijinks.

Also, Jeph's comment about "Briefly debated giving Marten a wet patch on his boxers." was hysterical.

Ahh, but you see, we have to measure that against Jeph's stated semi-serious intentions of removing all happiness from Marten's life. So we have to build of an aura of cynicism to soften the blow when the inevitable soul-crushing moment is upon us!

I agree that I don't think Elliot knows about Martin and Padma. Could be wrong, but I suspect he's pumped because Padma's announced at work she's not leaving just yet. Whether he's reading something into that decision is another matter, but it very well could be.

If this is so, we've probably not seen the last of the Cringing Marten, but for different reasons.

Cringing Marten sounds like the name of a bird.

"The Cringing Marten is commonly found in the Northeastern United States.  It is an onnivore, favouring a wide variety of foodstuffs.  Its plumage is subdued, ranging from brown to a light blud grey."
Very funny, and gets my Internets. Still, the bird's name is spelled "Martin." A Cringing Marten is clearly a small carnivore, a new subspecies of this part of the Mustelinae family. So: "It is an omnivore, favouring a wide variety of foodstuffs: although it normaly feeds on squirrels, mice, rabbits, birds, fish, insects, and eggs, the Cringing Marten will also eat fruit and nuts when these are available, and is passingly fond of pancakes.  Its colouring is subdued, ranging from brown to a light blud grey, often sporting odd markings in darker hues that some have humorously suggested appear to be slogans or the name of obscure musical collectives. The creature gets iys odd name from its non-aggressive tendencies, together with a decided predilection for moping."

I've often wondered why Jeph (or Veronica, if you prefer) named his lead character after a slightly overgrown weasel.

Could be, I suppose (apart from the eye colour!); but she's not a character that we've been introduced to in any other way.

Extras take their time to settle in.  We've been seeing a lot of the little redheaded girl lately (no, I am not  calling her Sweet-tits, they really don't look the same), but aside from her I think Jeph just has a pallette of types he uses.

Actually, it's probably just a face that's stuck in his head, like a tune that has to be gotten out somehow.

I wonder if Martens life flashed before his eyes at that point.

This one doesn't look like Sweet-Tits because she isn't.  Sweet-Tits shows up sometimes, and this girl's never been seen before.

Yeah, the girl in panel one who seems worried by Marten's lack of pants is not the same as any of the ones previously grouped under the "sweet-tits" monicker. In fact I have no idea how they are supposed to be related beyond having slightly the same shade of hair, which could just mean they favour the same brand of dye.

However, that doesn't answer the new guys question about 2066; they do have the same hair colour and style, similar builds and nose-/ear-shapes but they do not have the same colour eyes. Semi-identical twin sisters perhaps? Or Jeph intended to draw the same girl but messed up the eyes.

I prefer the interpretation that Elliot is high-fiving Marten because he isn't wearing pants.

If anything, and even this is a stretch, she looks a bit like a henna'd Penelope--not that I think Penelope has suddenly developed a passion for henna.

Indeed. Just checked back and the girl many people are calling "sweet tits" last appeared intone first two panels of 2031 and has noticeably more red in her hair. Oh, and has a completely different facial structure. Also a book on bird care.

Actually, she has... although I think today's girl has "bigger" glasses.

... and longer hair.

Neither is conclusive; I've personally got four pairs of "good" glasses, and the art is really not consistent enough that I'd trust length of hair as an identifying feature.

But on the other hand, there's not really much going for them being the same either.  Same face, same body, same dye ... oh, and glasses and generally the same hairstyle ...

... now why am I even arguing this? :-\
