Let's Talk About Triangles
« on: 11 Feb 2012, 22:05 »

I like triangles, you guys. Let's talk about them! Specifically the emotions they invoke in you! When I see a triangle, I get a feeling of comfort. It's like I'm home again. This is great, because triangles are everywhere! Triangles make me feel safe. I feel like if I could crawl into one, nothing could ever hurt me.

A triangle is a weapon in the original Ultima. I'm not sure why.

when you record triangles make sure to turn the volume down or you're bound for some serious headache later.

Here is my one piece of triangle-trivia. It is probably pretty mundane to anyone who has any decent knowledge of maths.
You know how in school you got taught that the angles in a triangle always added up to 180 degrees? This does not happen if you get a triangle that is sufficiently large!

My maths is pretty shoddy, but I just googled it, and it is indeed 180.

Well, on the surface of a (pseudo)sphere, or (more or less for the same reason) in a part of space bent out of shape by gravity it ain't exactly 180 degrees, and that's when the size of the triangle matters. The domain of geometry books is a flat plane, and there it is always 180 - irrespective of size.

Read the sines of times, and don't cosine a loan for the Greek government. Rimshot of the day.

Best counter example woul be a triangle that has one edge as the equator, and the other two runing to one of the poles (north ot south, doesn't matter).

the two angles at the equator are both 90 degrees, and the angle at the pole can be anything up to 180, so the three angles can add up to anywhere from 180 to 360.

As Skewbrow says, that's only on a curved surface, where the straight lines (like the equator) are actually curved.  In a plane, it's always 180 (aka pi).

Maybe it is the Bermuda Triangle, if it is positioned right.

Yeah, Carl, that's not a triangle! What do you think you are, some kind of teacher?

In spherical geometry that is called a triangle. To go for something perverse, we can also (in the same way) call the exterior of the triangle described by Carl-E also a triangle. It has 3 angles, 270 degrees each

In visual art, the placement of objects in a triangular fashion is thought to be one of the most visually appealing compositions.

Also, holy shit Particle Man and 90s awesomeness.

Bermuda

You don't call a spherical triangle 'a triangle' in Bermuda. The triangle calls you.

See what happens to a perfectly fine thread, when math teacher(s) take advantage of their numerical superiority.
