Keep in mind that books 1, 2 and 3 are lighter fare than the last four. Even Azkaban was only a shadow of the intensity that would hit the series in the later books.

Method of Madness:
I'd argue that book four is when it stops being a children's series. I'm actually rereading them through audio books at work. I'm on book 5 now.

Patrick:
My sister and I both managed to read each book in the same day (with the exception of Odor of the Penis, since I was feeling mighty contrarian that year, lol puberty). Pretty sure we're mutants.

Loki:
I *think* I read the 7th book of Harry Potter within a day, but I may be misremembering. I was on a wacky sleep schedule, due to staying up till midnight to get the book.

to be totally fair, that's about when kids of the characters' respective ages start noticeably growing up.
