I don't get how a watermark by itself "ruins" anything. A badly done watermark, yeah but for example that picture Grognard shared. I had to look for the signature to notice it and once I did, it doesn't affect the art or the joke.
Seriously the more I hear someone say watermarks or signatures wreck something, I just hear someone complaining they have to consider that an actual person did the work and that stuff doesn't just pop into existence for their entertainment.

It is always a choice of the artist. It is not up to anyone else what does or does not belong because it affects their enjoyment.

You could be like Al Hirschfeld and hide it. He hid the name of his daughter, Nina, within his drawings.
