Neko, that's what I mean - I suspect you are not alone in that, by any means. The word has been taken over by a very specific example of evangelising. My dad refers to himself as an evangelical atheist, which as you can probably imagine is rather awkward for me because it's very much an accurate description of his attitude to faith.

Apple Computer during its doldrums in the 90s fielded a Guy -- that was his first name, Guy Kawasaki, as a Mac Evangelist.
