You know how in dreams you randomly think of something, and ten your dream changes to the topic you were thinking about, no matter how absurd? I think the Baader Meinhof Phenomenon is something like that. (Okay, I don't really think that, but let's pretend for a minute). You first hear, say, the name of some obscure disease. Then in the next few days it seems like the same name, or something vaguely related to the disease, keeps popping up in your brain.
The real fact is that these are the times your brain realizes it's not living in a real world and tries to wake up by making you double-check your sanity. It offers you the metaphorical whit rabbit to follow out of the Matrix.
Also, deja-vus in Matrix canon are a sign which tell you Agents are screwing with the world somewhere nearby.
