I voted for Winslow for a change. We already learned the reason why Hannelore took a sample of Marten's blood. It's time for Winslow to explain this.

Winslow is too nice. He might be overcompensating for something. He's an Apple product: they "just work" until they don't, and after that the problems are very difficult to solve.

So how did Hannelore get a sample from Marigold? A sample of what?

Or was the question answered in Skewbrow's link? Something to do with gas chromatography, perhaps?

I've had this guy too many times.  Hell, I'm not 100% convinced I haven't had the actual inspiration for this guy.  Dora's going to be dead in the street before this is over, Faye, Sven, and Marten lying next to her.

Comic.

Heh, Dora "Harpy" Bianchi.

Seriously - I'm not sure the therapist is doing Dora any service in presenting that to her. But... if it gets her to think about herself, maybe it'll get us down the road a bit.

Gee Dora, you did ask...
Just because someone has problems in those areas doesn't mean they are completely like that all the time, which is the message Dora seems to be taking from it. Of course she's not all bad, but they're not having all these sessions to talk about her good parts.

Jeph's already getting criticism on Twitter over this - wrongfully, I might add.

Look, I'm not sure something like what her therapist is saying to Dora is "proper" in APA circles, but she did ask in that last strip (as WAYF points out), and he's probably got a pretty good idea about what's happening with Dora. She can give him attitude, but that's probably just therapeutic resistance on her part.

And any doofus that wants to think Dora can't cope with her breakup with Marten is just a complete idiot. Dora had these issues before she broke up with Marten. Hell, she probably had them before she met Marten.

Of course, however he depicted a psychiatrist, he'd get people saying that that psychiatrist was objectively wrong, because they're all objectively wrong to someone's objective knowledge.  Like the old cliché about certain books, psychiatry is the practice of multiple-choice.

Poor Jeph just cannot catch a break, can he?  :psyduck: I thought that he portrayed the psychiatrist perfectly, and nothing that Dora said in response to his diagnosis was OOC. It sounds to me like he hit the nail right on the head, and Dora (like any human being being criticized) doesn't want to accept the truth.

Maybe he should have guided her to the realization on her own, but maybe that wouldn't have worked (or hadn't worked), and we know from before that therapists in the QC world use techniques that would be, uh, unorthodox in our world.

Why would he not give her a straight-out out-front diagnose and "guide her towards it"? This isn't CBT or serious psych stuff, it's just regular therapy for a regular woman who has some issues. It's the way people do this, unless they're out to unnecessarily increase the number of therapy sessions so as to make more cash.

That is a mystery. Marigold didn't seem to notice the spilled sample on her sofa, so she probably was not behind it. If it was Hannelore's idea to get a sample from Marigold, then we would have seen Momo giving the sample to Winslow. Something else is behind this. Something. Something sinister??

The idea he's saying it straight to her now because she hasn't been guided to it like he might be trying to do is possible considering how Dora reacted to her first therapy session.

The thing that the Twitterers (whichever ones are bitching and moaning) have to get their minds around is that QC is not ENTIRELY based on real world events and practices. As a dedicated storyteller, Jeph will go for "plausible" so that it makes sense to us, but as a dedicated webcomic artist, would also give it a bit of an edge to keep us interested in the story.

Like when we were discussing last week's WCDT, the overall sentiment was "the therapist will say what he thinks, then get Dora to think about what he just said". With Dora's "DON'T YOU LEAVE ME HANGING", he gave her the quick wrap-up of what he wants Dora to explore. Dora will still have to find the answers, he's just given her a hint as to what she's supposed to be looking for.

I don't see a problem with that, but then I'm not a therapist (probably more in need of therapy than anything else).

Yes, sometimes it's almost as if it weren't a record of events but instead was a story told with various tools including exposition.

The therapist was also right. Dora is insecure. One way to handle that is to seek control. Everything about that diagnosis fits what we've seen of Dora since her first appearance

That said, even if Erebus-whatever's tweet was meant to be serious (whatever) and even if I agreed with it (I don't) -- it doesn't even logically follow from the comic.

I totally fail do see how it could even remotely be the basis for a joke. I say it shows a total lack of basic reading skills since, as you said, it has absolutely nothing to do with anything happening or having happened in the comic.

It looks like that twitter account (and the guy's comic) were recently created (1 month, 2 months, respectively)... I wouldn't be surprised if he made that comment simply to garner some attention, since it obviously didn't take into account Dora's history/the greater context of the comic/etc/whathaveyou/moob/owls.

While I'd support new webcomics generally, taking a potshot at a veteran like this seems like behavior not to be encouraged. IOW this is probably a case of "don't feed the troll"

If his comment was sincere, then he'd do well to stop trying to teach Jeph to suck eggs

Okay, I'm calling panel 3 sadface-Dora as the most D'awww-inducing cute/pitiful we've seen her in the entire comic. Hell, possibly even in the whole comic, barring a few of Hannelore's (obviously) or perhaps some of Faye's at her darker moments.

Note: If you don't agree with me, make sure you noticed her eyebrows turning up at the inside corners; without that detail she just looks grumpy.
