I don't know if I'd go that far, at least not while this Dora expression exists, but you do make a good point. There is certainly more than a hint of grumpy in there, which makes it a more compelling expression to look at.

She is a sculptor in metal, so might well use TIG welding, and it might be a visual metaphor for the way Faye burns Dora? I notice that Jeph painted the gas cylinder the correct green for Argon, a common inert gas used in TIG welding. Colour me impressed.

Being colorblind, I didn't pick up on the colour code of the tank.

I was assuming that it was an airbrush, and the tank was nitrogen or oxygen.

Now, why she would be airbrushing is almost as much a mystery as why she'd be welding in a coffee shop, but I'm willing to let it go as a non-sequitor placed there simply to drive us mad with speculation.

Presumably she's working on the next sculpture (coffeesaurus?); why Dora has allowed or suggested that she do it in CoD is a mystery (or is it the next plot point?)

I really hope Faye was wearing some kind of glove/long sleeve combo when she was welding. I decided to be a tough guy yesterday and not do that, and now I have a sweet UV-B* burn on my arm.

I'm pretty sure that the gas cylinder contains carbon dioxide since it's gray. That's the color code for CO2 in this neck of the woods. (I live in Keene,NH which isn't too far away from Northampton,MA)

Welcome, new person!

Faye presumably knows some of the safety precautions, since she's done metal sculpture. On the other hand, isn't there a safety rule about having flammable materials nearby?

A coffeeshop I frequent keeps a blowtorch around for browning off brulle tops in sugar on certain drinks, but the model Faye's using seems a bit overkill for that use, so I assumed it was gear for working on espressosaurus.

For those who are curious, Faye is likely using something like this here welder. It's about as portable as they come, plugs into a standard 120V single-phase outlet, and has enough power to do all but the largest jobs efficiently. Dora's electric bill is going to go up, and the Coffee O' Doom is going to smell real weird for a while, but there's no reason it wouldn't work otherwise.

As for the person saying the grey bottle is CO2, well, yes CO2 bottles are grey, but that bottle is standard argon green, as someone else pointed out previously. Also, in the first panel she's holding a TiG torch, plus the title of the comic is rather leading.

To the blowtorch theory, arc welders don't work that way. They only generate heat when they arc through something both solid and conductive. If Faye is making a drink with that thing, let's see... Well I suppose she could be using the welder to pump heat into a metal cup with a beverage in it, but that is so, so silly.

My conjecture, based on the fact that Faye is rather crafty, is that she was making/modifying something to either, A) help out around the shop, B) spruce the place up, or C) murder/maim Pintsize/customers.

EDIT: The rule about having flammable materials around is, "DON'T DO IT!".

At least you were wearing a visor, or you wouldn't have been able to see to type that. I was in the ER at work once when the ambulance brought in a guy who had been arc-welding without proper eye protection. It was not a pretty sight. Welders are not toys.

My boss MiG welds with no protection at all pretty much constantly. Just closes his eyes before making the actual weld. It's utter idiocy, and terribly dangerous, but he seems to be immune to heat, UV rays, and slag. One of my co-workers tried it once and ended up with an arc burn on his eyelids. Personally, I have no desire to go blind, so helmet it is.

EDIT: I'm really want to see what Faye's welding helmet looks like. Different personalities choose different helmets, in my experience. I'm curious to see what her design choice says about her.

Concerns over your boss' eyesight and general health aside (which seems to be his attitude) -- why would I trust a weld he makes? My limited understanding of TIG welding is that it requires a certain precision as far as distance of arc tip from the weld, as well as feeding in the fill metal, which seems to be an impossibility with one's eyes shut.

Yes, you're definitely correct, he never TiGs like that, and to be honest if anyone could I would be *very* impressed. But MiG is just point and shoot, if what you're doing doesn't have to be structurally sound. It's like a glue gun. A really, really hot, dangerous glue gun for metal.

My comment wasn't so much about workplace safety as it was about Faye needing SPF Irish. I wouldn't want to be around for the complaining and battle spatula throwing if she got an arc burn all over her arms and hands.

I typically go glove-less on my filler hand when TIG welding, but yeah, it's surprising that she doesn't have a glove for her torch hand.

Also, yeah, the long sleeve thing too. I have also gone short sleeved and gotten burned.
