First thought before seeing final Panel - 'Pintsize?? ...... Yup, that's Pintsize.'

My thought before reaching the second to last panel was, "So where is Pintsize in all of this...  Oh God!  I had to ask."

For comic #2184...

1. Back again from another QC hiatus due to RL.  How some of you people manage to post on every strip, I envy your time...

2. While I very much liked Dora's previous longer black hair design, I find this one just as acceptable.  (I am just such a romantic sucker for the errant lock of hair across a pretty girl's face...)

3. "Faye?" [THUD].  And that is why I have mixed feelings about my children being able to physically defend themselves.  Partly because I am afraid they might use such skills on old weary-boned me :-X .

4. Looks like Samantha now has a "replacement" for Padma's company.  Perhaps we will see a nature outing with Samantha, Elliot, and Faye.

I feel like today's comic shows a facet of Dora's control issues again. Jim wanted to not share something (yet) with Dora which would possibly have been slightly hurtful to most people. When Dora finds out, she puts on this "I'm sane and rational and totally cool about it" show, but her motive is actually to stop Jim keeping stuff from her. It's not that Dora necessarily wants control over what Jim does (or she is aware that that's ridiculous), but having as much knowledge as possible gives her the same feeling of being in charge of her situation.
If I remember correctly, she did this to Marten after the fight about Cossette asking him out. She got mad that Marten didn't tell her, then a short while later she asked him about the girls he's attracted to. It also illicits the same reaction from the guys she's involved with - "Wait what? You're not upset?"

Faye, Faye,

NEVER teach someone a chokehold without:

a.  agreeing on the signal to release;
b.  knowing how to break it; or
c.  Being prepared to do egregious violence to the person doing it to get out.

Since c doesn't seem an option here...

I think it's a little late for option c.

It's hard to visit egregious violence on someone when your collapsed all over the floor.

I afraid the Pugnacious Peach might be losing her edge. First Padma lands a blow to the face and now this?

You have to receive a lot more damage to lose control of bodily functions than just getting knocked out. Otherwise you'd see boxers, MMA, professional athletes making a mess all over the ring / arena / field more often.

I hardly think Dora's trying to exert control here: it's a simple matter of not wanting to be lied to -- even a lie of omission.  It is a little bit condescending to have people keep stuff from you because they think you can't handle it. If Dora's cool with Jim going on dates because she isn't ready / isn't attracted, then she oughtta be taken at her word.

Dora's expression in the third panel is pretty funny. Jim may be nonplussed and taken aback at the casual violence of the CoD, but Dora doesn't even bat an eyelash.

Hm... in my experience going unconscious means losing control of most bodily functions. If Sam interrupted the blood flow to Faye's head for roughly 5 seconds (give or take) it would be pretty much lights out for her for a couple of minutes.
Again, just my experience from doing self protection for almost a decade now. I'm not down with the medical details.   :-\

Sorry. Enjoy your evening.

I think you really have to hit your head pretty hard to lose your bowels/bladder, and I know that vomiting after getting clocked in the head is an indicator of a concussion. If you're unconscious and puking, it's an indicator of a severe closed head injury.

So, just being unconscious shouldn't cause puking or loss of bowels. It takes an actual brain injury to accomplish that.

And we have to be specifically trained not to.

(Wasn't Sam thirteen on their first date?  Did she lose a year?)

Well, it doesn't really matter, since Marten's the backup babysitter from now on...

EDIT: Oh, sure, THIS is the death metal interlude...

Wait, Marten?  Did I miss something?  Then again, if Faye is unconscious due to whatever she teaches Sam in the future, since she lives with Marten, hmm.  Never mind, it makes sense now.

Yes, Jim said Sam is thirteen. If we assume she's something like 12.9 and that Jim was rounding up, then we don't have to resort to the hypothesis that QC is a work of fiction and that the author isn't 100% consistent.

I was going to post something along these lines, but you pretty much encapsulated it. She just has this knack for subtle reverse manipulation that allows her to keep deniability while still exerting control. By couching it in reasonableness ("You don't have to do it behind my back") she's able to convince herself that she's not being controlling ("I wasn't telling him what to do... I was telling him what *not* to do").

I thought the whole "You don't have to do it behind my back" thing was a bit odd. If two people have been on a casual date *once*, does either of them have a "back" for anyone to do anything behind? Wouldn't that require some sort of continuing relationship? Obviously Jim felt there was an issue, but then he has broken the old rule: "Don't date co-workers or business associates", so awkwardness is to be expected.

Faye's last thoughts: The Force is strong with this one.

On a more serious note, I bet a lot of it has to do with Sam actually getting adult interaction for an extended time. I wonder if she spends a lot of time left to her own devices.

We know she's not allowed to walk home by herself or be at home by herself. On the other hand, her dad probably keeps the long hours typical of a shop owner and doesn't spend much time with her, and clearly not enough quality educational time. At a guess, she's out of balance spending too much time with girls her own age.

Since when does Faye play with a knife at COD? She hasn't done it before. Why is she doing it now? Has she been waiting to a have an impressionable youth before engaging in this behavior? I don't get it. Perhaps something is going on with her. But I suspect no one is going to call her on it. I also don't see how neither Dora or Jim are reacting to her playing with the knife.

(And where is the rest of the COD staff?)
