She doesn't strike me as particularly diabolical. More "YAY! Stuff and things are good."

Really like Jeph did the perspectives with different expressions. I've only seen them done with a default :meh:

It just hit me - she's the replacement for Padma at TSB.

At least that position needs to be filled, and (for several reasons) it is unlikely that Faye would be interested. She's the only barista at CoD who might (?) be qualifed for the job.

I kind of hope that we will meet the gang from tSB every now and then. Also Jeph put a lot of effort into drawing the interior, so he will likely reuse it (wishfully crossing my fingers).

She could either be a new person in Marten and Fayes apartment

The new Secret Bakery employee

Be a relative of Clinton or Penelope (Clinton cause it would start the awesome friendship between Hanners and Penelope just feels right)

I would put scientist but I don't think that would give much chance for her to have much appearances.

I'm going to invoke Chekov's gun here:

Way back here, we all saw the cafeteria's menu that said "Space Cake!"

Someone HAD to make that cake.

There's an opening at that little Bakery in Northampton.

Jeph's got a character who he wants to unleash upon us all.

You connect the dots.

(Cherry on top: she's Francis's sister/cousin/other blood relative).

Perhaps one of Dora's new neighbors? She works her way into the cast by introducing herself, Dora mentions CoD, and then after a chance meeting between Marigold and Dale, she turns out to be one of Dale's Alliance buddies.

We can make some assumptions based upon her appearance:

  • She has unfashionable glasses, acne, and an overbite, which leads to certain stereotypes; the only other character with comparable traits is Marigold.
  • She stoops and has more nervous body language that the other interns (panel 3, #2204 in particular), although her behaviour in #2205 would also indicate that she can be quite assertive.
  • She has been drawn with more detail than the other interns and has been consistently placed in the centre of each panel or closest to Marten, so I think Jeph has a larger role planned for her.

I thought they were freckles rather than acne, it would go with her pale skin and red hair if they were. Other than that I have no real opinions from her appearance.

Yes, but in the real world, there is no such thing as 'character design'. Also, those are definitely freckles.

Seems like most of Jeph's characters drawn in profile have an overbite...you can see Marten's in panel 4 of 2205.  I think it probably has something to do with when they're talking? I think in that same panel NoIdeaGirl has deliberately drawn in her lower jaw in expectation of what Marten has to say.

Edited to add:
Looks like I'm not the only one who's noticed:
In the last couple hundred strips, from 2000 to present, every character seems to have developed an overbite.

Yeah, when I was typing that I did wonder whether I could really make judgments based on appearances and then I remembered that, as LTK says, these aren't real people, they are designed. Jeph has plenty of form in creating characters whose appearances match their personalities.

Yes, but in the real world, there is no such thing as 'character design'. Also, those are definitely freckles.

Good call - I was going with acne as there are are only three spots and only on one side, but I think you may be right.

Between the overbite and in particular the shape of the nose, I'm gonna guess that this is Marigold's sister.

Wildly different hair, body types, skin tones, ... I think not.

Also, you can see NoIdea's overbite straight on, her upper teeth show (something no other character's teeth do.  Not even Clinton's).

Things we know about her based on her name:
- drives a Plymouth Satellite
- faster than the speed of light
- breathes pink air (has pink hair?)
- prefers red trees
- is immortal
- doesn't have a head
- emphatically *not* from mars or one of the seven stars that shine after 03:30

Redheads can vary wildly from siblings in body types, hair of course, skin tone, etc...although I'm basing this on experience / sample size of exactly one friend.  After all, it's all idle speculation anyway; probably not related to any given cast member.

I don't know if this has been linked but there was a female concept for Clinton before he was introduced to the comic and I can sort of see Claire in it but I'm not so sure that was the intention.

She might know some of the other cast members, but from a distance or as an outsider. Like how she "heard" about COD.

  • Jimbo (the redneck romance writer) and Jim (the owner of The Secret Bakery)
  • Benji (Raven's D&D playing "boyfriend") and Benji (the Canadian Classically-trained Guitar busker)

Wil was familiar enough with him that he called him by first name after the "open weeping".

I don't suspect we'd have that many "Steves" in this One-Steve Show. (And no, I won't link to TVtropes.org for that; I'll be nice today.)

Can't remember if these have been shown but while doing an archive dig I found something kind of neat.

Possible Claire prototypes:
http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2066 First panel on left.

http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2080 First panel on right.

Edit: Something I noticed rereading the thread:

Something neat I noticed on an old JephDraw post: http://www.jephdraw.com/2006/02/line-weight.html

That character instantly made me think of Samantha, especially in this strip, possibly just because of the blue top. Although the drawing seems to be titled Claire. (if you view image properties)

So that drawing may have become Samantha and the name became our former Mystery Girl!
