Daria!
« on: 18 Aug 2012, 12:03 »

Since there was quite some talk about this wonderful show from the 90s in the pointless thread... and considering that I just finished watching all the series and both films a few days ago. It feels just right to open a thread and discuss! I watched the series when I was too little so I didn't give it much thought and stopped caring for it. But I gave it another try at 17 and I got hooked like never before. I could definitely relate to the feelings and opinions of most characters (not only the main characters) and I saw most of the things in the show in real life (although in a bit more "normal" scenario most of the time).

So yeah....

I actually find Trent very hard to figure out. Although formerly being a teenage girl with a bloke like him around has a lot to do with that. Some of the stuff he says and does towards Daria is super confusing, which I'm sure is intentional from a storyteller point of view but a character motivation point of view is baffling.

Trent was a weird guy indeed. I still can't figure out if he at some point really liked Daria or just found her cute and liked her as a sister. Considering how oblivious he could be, I'm betting for the later one.

EDIT: But now that I remember... He did say once "If you were a few years older we could go out sometime". Which led me to believe that he would have liked to be with her but she being in highschool kind of turned him off(?) and just started to playfully joke around the subject when he was alone with her.

Daria did have a crush on Trent and, at one stage, I think he somewhat returned it but I think it settled into more of a friendship - Kinda big brother little sister - by the end of the series if memory serves.

I think Fandom spent more time pairing Daria with Jane or - in the case of one story I know of - Jane with Quinn.

Then there was the Daria/Tom/Jane arc.

I've only started watching the fifth season.

I think the moment that cemented, "What is he at?" for Trent for me was the dialogue he and Daria had at the end of the episode where he failed on helping her and Jane with a school project. The conversation seems obviously meant to be the writers going, "This relationship would not work." but then after it Trent kisses Daria on the cheek. Although she doesn't blush or anything so I assume it's meant to show her feelings for him being gone.

The two do seem close in friendship and supportive of each other. The highschool thing could turn him off or maybe he just knows what Daria is like and a relationship with her would be more complicated that what he wants. I can't really see him being as sensitive to her ethics and beliefs as Tom is without pulling a, "Fix The Guy" type thing.

I'll stop there. I think I could write an essay on this stuff just about Daria and Trent off the top of my head.

Lol I just rewatched all of it.

The conversation between Trent and Daria sums up their relationship during the whole series.
It´s about something completely different but the subtext is, as both seem to understand, their "thing" throughout the story, bringing the unspoken things to a close.

Absolutely love that scene. Quite a brilliant break-up without being a break-up. I do believe that both understood very well what they were talking about between the lines. To me: Trent's kiss is just a way of biding farewell to the subject and tell her to move on.

It's neat hearing another perspective. I think yours makes a lot of sense.

Anyone got a character they want to analyze?

Just finished the fifth series. That last episode hit a bit close for me. Just the last film to go. Gonna be so sad to have watched it all but also excited to see it.

I loved this show back when it came out. Haven't seen it since it came off the air. I should watch it again.

That last episode hit a bit close for me.

Man, that episode is definitely moving. I mean, I didn't have such problems at school but just the thought that you might have been responsible for fights when you were only a child is something that can haunt you for a while.  :-\

Ending a series like Daria is a bit depressive to me. You just want it to continue forever... But once you finish it you understand that it's the kind of story that must end in order to really make a point.

The moment that got me was, "I like to read." followed by, "She doesn't want to fit in." Also little Quinn in the back of the car bouncing talking about how she liked doing things Daria didn't was bitterly funny to me.

Oooh I forgot about Quinn. I like how she's quite an interesting character despite how "shallow" she appears at first. Sometimes she even feels miserable  since she is smart enough to notice how her friends *are* shallow but she just want to fit in so badly she puts a mask every day, probably fearing a social state that could be similar to Daria's. This is shown specially in the episode where Jane & Daria want to make a movie about her.

I really enjoy how much she grows as a character in the first movie and also in the episode where Daria becomes a substitute teacher. Quite a moving moment when she calls Daria "my sister" for the first time in public.

I especially liked Stacey and Tiffany's calm reaction of, "Yeah, we knew that. So what?" when Quinn said it in contrast to Sandy's mocking of her. Felt like a good showing up of her two-faced nature, which is very on the nose at times but you can still understand the pressure to be part of a group of people you don't necessarily like.

Her role in the second movie is also quite moving. I won't give you spoilers though in case you haven't seen it yet.

Makes me wish I had MTV down here - or the DVD's at least.

My own interest has been kept alive by this site, which has helped.   :)

Watched the film. Gah! It's over.  :-(

Loved it. Quinn's arc was great, loved her reactions. I liked Jane's arc too. Daria's speech at the end was class. I have one personal preference nitpick, which I'll avoid saying because it's somewhat shipping related. That's not to say I was disappointed though, very happy with all outcomes.

Aw shit, I doubt anyone would be oh-so-offended if you say something ship-related. Then again, I always laughed at the shipping "problem" but since this isn't QC I doubt there should be a problem unless it's as realistic as saying Brittany with Trent, then we have a problem hahahaha. It's like when Daria was a substitute teacher and gave one of the J-dudes a B in his Romeo & Juliet essay... She didn't agree with him that Mercutio had a thing for Romeo but gave him credits for arguing the point well enough to not be considered a bad joke. :P

All it was is that there was no Trent and Daria interaction. I didn't want anything romantic but they don't share any words at all so it seemed a bit odd to me.

I liked Daria subbing, she seemed a very fair teacher which was a great way to play it.

I liked this show and Beavis and Butthead as well.  Even though Daria was a spinoff from Beavis and Butthead, they were quite different shows.  Beavis and Butthead made me laugh hard more often than just about anything else on TV, but it was definately a guilty pleasure, partly because it was so often so deliberately crude.  Daria was a lot more realistic (though some of the characters--especially the faculty at the school--were really exaggerated) and a lot less crude, plus characters actually got character development.  I especially like the reveal that

VonKleist posted one a few post earlier. I have only checked it out a little since I already have the series in my computer but it seems good. Good luck and hopefully you'll enjoy it!
