Ugh, what a bunch of whining.  "Oh I'm Jeph, I make a living doing what I love. Isn't America such a corrupt and broken country? Listen to me bitch and complain instead of doing something constructive."

Cannot wait till tomorrow.

^ This!

Whatever that means.

What did people think "change" meant anyway?  I just took it to mean a black president and was pretty content.

A smoke detector should be treated with respect even if it doesn't do something constructive like putting out the fire.

Especially when we are guests of the smoke detector.

She really hasn't worked with Momo all that long. And I figured Marten was her closest friend at this point. At least he called her on the whole "talking to my girlfriend's ex" thing.

This comic actually makes me really sad.  It reminds me that I really only have acquaintances right now and no friends since I just started college.  I actually feel really bad for Tai. :/

From beneath the comic:
Quote from: Jeph
That musta startled the hell out of Angus.

Unless...unless he's used to it...

I'm SURE what he meant by that was that he regularly gets on Faye's nerves by leaving the toilet seat up...

Aside from the fact that Tai's 'no real friends' revelation is really really sad and I'm gonna take a moment
...
:(
...
can I just say how much I LOVE Jeph's fake advertising tricks and slogans? They really make the QC world a world, and in all honesty I'd rather buy stuff in the real world if it had Jeph's advertising touches on it.

Warning - while you were reading a new reply has been posted. You may wish to review your post.

Wow, no kidding.

Annnyway, just for a change, did review my post and decided "meh."

Onto the new comic: I guess the people who thought it was inappropriate for Tai to talk to Dora's ex had a point after all.

How well acquainted does Tai feel with Faye? They've been at parties together, but is there a case where they've compared notes about life problems the way Marten and Tai have?

Somehow, if Tai did call Faye, that just might underscore Tai's point in the comic -- that she doesn't have close friends who aren't ex-flings and fuckbuddies, and/or she doesn't have anyone else to have a meaningful conversation about relationships.

At the same time, while Marten's 'cool' about Tai and Dora possibly getting together, that's still a far cry from being cool with holding Tai's metaphorical hand through the whole process.

Comic!

And there you have it.  Jeph answers both our questions.

Does Tai have real friends to talk to? Nope.

Did she try Faye? Yep.  As she SHOULD have.  Though, it is Faye.  Poor choice going to her so late in the night.

And Marten.  Yea, he's 'over' Dora.  But it most certainly does make sense (as I figured) that he's a bit miffed/put off that Tai thought it'd be ok for the ex-boyfriend to hold her hand as she gets with and talks about his ex.  That's normal, as I've said.  We'll see what Tai has to say.

I can see Marten giving her advice this time.  But I think (thinking back to how much more annoyed he gets when people ask if he's ok with it) that this is a one time deal only.  That Tai shouldn't/can't keep relying on the ex for advice.  That it isn't fair.  At least, I hope he is and is demonstrative about it and not passive.

I'm pretty sure that Terry Pratchett once said or wrote something along the lines of "Revolution doesn't bring change, it just leaves a bloody mess all over the place."

He did, however write "And so the children of the revolution were faced with the age-old problem: it wasn't that you had the wrong kind of government, which was obvious, but that you had the wrong kind of people. As soon as you saw people as things to be measured, they didn't measure up."
I don't remember that in any of the Discworld series (or at least up to "Thud"), or was this one of his quotes? Still... the man has a penchant for making sense.
The second one is definitely a Vimes-ism, at a guess, I'd say from Night Watch. The first one, ironically given your signature, feels like it comes from Interesting Times itself.
Yeah... my memory is kind of static-y sometimes. Well, I'm re-reading the series anyway (up to Moving Pictures at this point), so I'll probably find out in a few months.

Poor Tai, though. It's hard working or living somewhere and not really having anyone you can talk seriously to (particularly when you need help). I don't know that Momo wouldn't have a good confidant, though (her and Tai have worked with each other for a while, and they are pretty good friends in any case). Marten might be the "go-to guy", but given his past with Dora, he would be considered a last resort.

At least Faye didn't go all Cthulhu over the phone, though. Tai wouldn't even be willing to approach the apartments. Or the town.

What did people think "change" meant anyway?  I just took it to mean a black president and was pretty content.

It meant that he was aiming high at lofty goals.  Apparently, though, you're not allowed to do that as President.  The ones who complain that he's done nothing won't even acknowledge that, hey, it's kinda cool to have a guy in charge who even WANTS to aim that high.

The issue is that BOTH fringes started believing he was a Socialist.  The fringe on one side was pissin' their pants 'cause they thought he'd take us back to 20th century Russia, and the fringe on the other side was all "Where are the completely socialized medicine and the magically transformed political landscape and the unicorns that you explicitly said would automatically appear??"

The reality that many didn't want to see is that the President is a left-leaning centrist - neither the demon nor the angel that the fringes wanted him to be.  How can a man be expected to live up to fictional expectations, created solely in the minds of the fringe constituents?  In this situation, the President never had a chance to satisfy.

Poor Tai. :C I keep having "omfg who do i talk to gahhh" issues, too. I'm hoping this talk ends with Angus walking out of Faye's room naked and half asleep, cuz he's heading for the bathroom or something.
Why? Because the whole date was kinda sad to me and it's looking like the next few strips are going to be a little sad too.

Dunno if this has already been brought up in previous comments or whatnot, but interesting:

Apparently Marten was originally not cool with the prospect of Dora/Tai makeouts.

So I guess Marten's views and feelings have been evolving, and he's finally come to this place through introspection, etc.  Makes much sense to those of us who were all "How is Marten just fine with it?"  Big ups to Jeph to believable character development.

Was thinking that both Faye and Marten had appropriate reactions to Tai's phone call - Faye, who is an acquaintance, reacted with a "WTH! Don't you understand that I'm sleeping!"  Because lets face it, if someone you didn't know well called up in the middle of the dark to ask advice on their new date, your reaction would likely be similar.

MArten, being a  little more invested in Tai as a friend is ready to talk, even though it's weird that this is his ex.

But hey, at least he learned to put on pants before going out for this talk.  Progress.

Wow.  Don't remember that.  Actually, if anything, if Tai keeps coming to Marten, I can see the feelings from that strip or some form, and just boil over with exasperation and go ape shit.  Has Marten ever gone ape shit?  Best I can guess is really angry drunk post Dora.  I mean, a normal guy can only take so much nagging, questions, and begging for advice on how someone gets your old girl.

Marten getting snarky and fighting back a little? I like it! I hope Marten gives her an earful for the whole way she's been dealing with this situation. He's already said that he's fine with the current couple but like any reasonable person, he's getting upset that Tai keeps coming to him about every little detail and problem.

One of the things I come away with from the "ex fuckbuddies" comment is that Tai dived head first into the party lifestyle and burned a lot of bridges in the process. Now that she's trying for something more serious, she's left with Marten, the ex of her new girlfriend, as her closest friend, and the poor girl has no clue how to deal with a committed monogamous relationship. I think Martin's patience is going to be sorely tested in the coming weeks. If he makes it without a major outburst, he should be nominated for sainthood .

*edit* For that matter, how will Dora feel about her new girlfriend going to he ex for advice?

One thing that I like about the Dora/Tai pairing is that I am learning more about Tai. I am more sympathetic toward her than I was before this story arc. That's about the only thing I like about the Dora/Tai pairing, but, eh.

Having said that... Does no one in the QC Universe know how to handle a sleepless night? I have never had a lot of friends, but if I was upset over something, I certainly wouldn't call any of them or randomly show up in the middle of the night. Sometimes you just have to deal with it-- contemplating your own feelings BY YOURSELF can be a good thing. The date went relatively well. Nothing HORRIBLE happened. I absolutely understand her wanting to talk to a friend about it, and even coming away from it unsure about things, but nothing that would need to be talked about right away like that. Seriously. Maybe take up journal keeping or something?

  • I've been trained in your Jedi arts by Count Dooku

I have pretty much just one person I can text if I freak out in the middle of the night. But she always takes like two hours to reply (More often than not, I text at 2:30 and hear from her at 4:30), so I've already had time to cry it out and fall asleep. She always says something soothing, and I just go back to sleep. Or not.

Point is that I can't imagine going over to someone's apartment or house or dorm in the middle of the night and expect them to welcome me with open arms. Just seems presumptuous. Not that Tai was being that way. That's just what it would feel like to me if I were to do it. Sometimes all you can and should do is lie down and try to sleep.

"Sleeping on it" is psychologically proven to help your thought process! Sleeping is the time in which your brain starts to sort things out you couldn't figure out consciously. Maybe some people in QC should give it a try... Obviously not as entertaining, but it does concern me a bit that they don't try to handle problems on their own for a bit before going to someone else. That seems really ... dependent. But I hate asking for help, so maybe that's just me.

... I'm pretty sure I'm incapable of making a short and simple post. Dadgum.

I think Martin's patience is going to be sorely tested in the coming weeks. If he makes it without a major outburst, he should be nominated for sainthood .

I don't know. Marten looks like he's enjoying knowing more about Dora than Tai does - it's always nice knowing more about something than your boss does.  Or maybe he's altruistic enough that he wants Dora to be happy, so he's happy if she is.

Hello everyone, by the way -  I've just de-lurked. Been enjoying QC for over a year and this forum for a couple of months, about time I said something...
