"Emily discovers mango smoothies" and "We discover a totally new meme food" are of course entirely interchangeable. :P

I predict that Marten will tell Tai to trust her instinct. I mean, her instinct has worked out as well as it possibly could so far.

And here I was, coming in here to get a new poll up and everything. :P ;)

Things didn't go well for Marty the last time he had to console someone over a dating epiphany. I can only hope that Tai doesn't do something that puts a wedge between Faye and Angus or something.

And Jeph's got to step it up; Hannelore's slipped below the 30% threshold. ;)

I'm just settling in to see what late night advice Marten will have for Tai. It seems to me that Tai's freekout may be along the "I'm not good enough for her" line of reasoning. Or it may just be a general "I'm so scared of screwing up this good thing I've got going".

Or a little of both.

I know in last weeks thread, folks debated the wisdom of talking to Marten about his ex, but all evidence points to the fact that Marten is Tai's closest friend at this point in her life, especially if she's ended all the polyamorus relationships she was in. (And I assume she has).

In any case, I'm looking forward to the week.

And I really don't know what to expect on the Tai-Dora front. I would have said Dora is too mature for Tai, but Tai seems to genuinely care and wat to improve for her.

That's a major turnaround from the Obama-love that the newsposts had during the last election season.

That said, YB hit the nail on the head, pretty much.

From another time, and another thread.

Yelling Bird: In the same vein as FilmCritHulk, Yelling Bird found a handy niche for his persona and talents as a blogger with emphasis on politics and society, who used his crude way of communicating to deliver some surprisingly intelligent analysis and discourse. To this day, his Twitter account remains active, and is considered by many a bastion of common sense and obscenity.

I think I called it. :P

I'm gonna duck and cover in case this thread gets political.

Mmmmm hotdogs.

Amusingly, I discovered yesterday that the Australian JB HiFi website was advertising special public holiday opening hours for a bunch of their stores in Sydney today.

No, it was not a public holiday here.

Yelling bird's rant does make me wonder about the state of politics in the QC 'verse. For example, we know the political parties employ professional straw men. And how badly would they behave knowing there was a superior intelligence that could intervene if things got too out of hand? Would it make things worse, knowing that no matter how bad things got, someone could fix it, or would things be better, knowing that the benovolent sigularity AIs could pull a "Day the Earth Stood Still" if the politicos got too out of line?

At the risk of delving into politics, I will say things aren't all that bad. No one has challenged a fellow legislator to a duel, or has crossed the isle to beat an opponent with his cane in a century or so. It has been much worse.

I mean at one point, the country split in half. That's about as bad as it gets.

I did. I should have been to bed a few hours ago. But now I have an image  running through my head of an intrepid Australian legislator trekking across the desolate outback, surviving rabid dingo attacks and drop bear mauling to arrive at Canberra half starved and ragged to stumble down the aisle saying,

"If the right Honorable Chair will allow me to express my feelings toward my  Right Honorable colleague?"

"Proceed."

At which point the aggrieved gentleman proceedes to beat the man in question vigorously about the head and shoulders with a brass knobbed cane, all while his fellow legislators say things like,

"Hear, hear," or "Boo".

I think pretty much everyone in America (other than the reptilian corporate overlords and their immediate lickspittles) agrees that the system is utterly broken and worthless...the reason thing aren't changing is pretty much that there's no alternative other than bloodshed in the streets, which would quickly turn into martial law and the removal of what little largely-cosmetic freedom we now have.  I've long felt the desire to cry out for bloody retribution and the toppling of ivory towers, but ultimately any such activity is only going to make things worse.  We have become a nation of spineless couch potatoes, and the best thing we can do is just sort of quietly accept our increasing irrelevance and hope things don't get too much worse, while Japan and China and India gradually assume the status of world powers which we've willfully abdicated.

I'm pretty sure that Terry Pratchett once said or wrote something along the lines of "Revolution doesn't bring change, it just leaves a bloody mess all over the place."

He did, however write "And so the children of the revolution were faced with the age-old problem: it wasn't that you had the wrong kind of government, which was obvious, but that you had the wrong kind of people. As soon as you saw people as things to be measured, they didn't measure up."

Awwww, Jeph said the comic was gonna be dark.  I was hoping it was gonna be a twisted and morbid abomination, but instead it was just slightly misguided truth.

Still, an enjoyable comic.

The amount of fodder Yelling Bird has access to would be an entire comic series in and of itself. However, the state of politics being as it is, we have to vote for not who will fix the problems with the country, but who will screw it up the least.

Hmm.  I don't like a lot of what has been done, but if you say the parties are equivalent, you are either stupid or disingenuous.  Deciding you want to sit out the process because "There's all these billionaires throwing influence around" is like saying you aren't going to the candy store because "There's all these fat kids".  Billionaires have power and the will to accrue more. They also want to protect the power they have.  All of this means they are going to insert themselves into the process and have a disproportionate amount of influence.
If you are looking for an excuse not to participate, I'm sure you can find one.
But the place is run by the folks that show up.

Some of the differences (for the really dense):
-The financial burdens of running the country borne by the elite or the middle class.
-An energy policy that skews towards more fossil fuels, or more efficiency and alternative energy
-A HUGE military with an interventionist, "boots on the ground" bent or a LARGE military that uses proxies and diplomacy
-Education bought a la carte, where you get the schools you buy, or education administered by the govt., one system for all.

If you can't find something thats important to you on that list, then you are part of the reason we have reptilian overlords and not a real democracy.

It's politics.  Nothing, unfortunately, is or will ever be perfect.

Unless we can jump forward in time to the timeline of Stark Trek!

That said, I wouldn't say h3 has failed utterly in his quest for change.  He's delivered many good things.  He was just naive thinking we'd actually reach a time where compromise within parties was more accesible.

I will say though, as a journalism graduate, the state of the media is rather corrupt and pathetic though. :psyduck:
