Prison Architect is a game being made by Introversion Software, the same folks who brought us Darwinia, Uplink, Multiwinia and DEFCON. It's essentially a Dwarf Fortress like game where you play the warden of a prison, dealing with overcrowding, prison riots, fights, shankings and all of the other lovely problems that prisons have. Well, they've put it up for pre-order and include alpha access with it.

Personally, I think it's a bit pricey at $30. I think $15 - $20 is much more in line with modern price expectations, but I'm probably going to pre-order anyways seeing as how I love the developer and love this style of game.

I'm probably not alone, but this game makes me wonder if I'm actually a horrible person for thinking how building and managing a prison can be a ton of fun. Games like that don't come around very often, do they?

It's such a brilliant, yet simple change on the strategy genre, where your enemy is inside your walls instead of out in the world. Or you could view it as introducing a weighty moral theme to the genre of management sims, which can be pretty emotionally flat in a lot of cases. Either way, I'm really glad this game exists.

From what I can tell in interviews, they took this specific subject matter on both for the very dark humor as well as the moralistic themes. I know one of the subject matters they were having a very hard time deciding on whether to include or not was that of prison rape, because they were concerned they wouldn't be able to add that tightrope of humor and social criticism into the game without turning it into a juvenile rape jokes that just trivialized it. Not sure if they ever decided what to do with it, but as the video says, the game is likely going to be in Alpha for a while, so they got time to decide what they're doing with that.

VERY much against this. Stereotypes. I hated Prison Tycoon for the same reason.
