What kind of reason is 'Stereotypes'?
jwhouk:
What the public believes goes on in prisons ISN'T HOW IT HAPPENS.
<-- Knows this from personal experience (as the guy with the keys).
LTK:
Oh, you mean that kind of stereotypes. But still, does the inaccuracy of the representation mean that it's not worthwhile (or even wrong) to approach the subject by way of a management sim? It doesn't strike me as a particularly egregious example artistic liberty, compared with, say, war games.

A couple of interesting pieces about this, particularly addressing the problem with presenting this kind of setting as jwhouk has said;
First a Eurogamer article where the designers specifically talk about how their idea for the game changed as they realised this was a serious subject matter to address.
And then this video from a Rezzed conference on the game, in which somebody specifically asks the question on how they're going to approach a pretty touchy subject matter;

It doesn't seem like they're shying away from the controversy of it. Will it be a stereotype free, 100% realistic portrayal of the prison system? No, probably not, but it certainly looks like they're trying to open a dialogue on the setting within the campaign.
I'd suggest to watch - or play if you can - the tutorial to get an idea of this. It levels some very serious criticisms of the death penalty and this is your introduction to the game.

This picture was labeled "3500 staff, 35 prisoners"
Apparently the slowdown was perfectly manageable and pathfinding was working as well as it was earlier at normal numbers... which is to say about as well as an alpha can manage. :P Apparently the game handles multi-threading no problem then. Lord I wish DF would handle multiple processors.
