I generally prefer the girl keep them on, but if you're going to take them off, that's the way to do it.

I haven't worn tighty-whiteys since...9th grade at least.  Except for a brief stint of one month in 2006 when I was at ROTC basic training, and that was only because other guys who'd been there said that they offered "better support" for all the physical training we'd be doing.  Like a schmuck, I followed their advice to a letter and brought only boxer briefs.

Yeah...boxer briefs to wear with uniforms that don't exactly breathe, in Alabama, in the middle of summer.  That...was a mistake.  For one, even though they were the right size, they still felt very constricting, and on top of that, their 'sealed' elastic hems essentially stopped airflow in already non-breathing pants.  This meant that the swamp ass was even worse since air couldn't circulate, and the briefs quickly turned grody and were just...ick.  Not helped either by the fact that we only washed our clothes once while we were there**, and I'm still convinced that the driers didn't fully dry our clothes (again, Alabama in summer), so putting even a 'clean' pair of briefs on still felt...yeah...

Burned those boxer briefs after I got home and have resolved to never wear any kind of briefs again.

**-Sounds gross, but you really don't notice the smell after a week or so, until a few captains come to your hallway for inspection and the first thing they say is, "Smells like a herd of horses farted in here."

Tighty whities are not the same as boxer briefs. Which one do you mean? Either way, ugh.

^Boxer briefs.  To me they basically are tighty-whiteys (ok, this pair is blue, but ignore that) with very short leg extensions.

Right, that's why they're boxer briefs - tighty whities are briefs. So boxer briefs are briefs with legs.

Were they maybe too tight? Personally I love a guy in tight underpants, but apparently that can be mighty uncomfortable for the dangly bits.

Yes they were. My dangly bits (just btw, this is one of the funniest euphemisms for male genitalia I've ever heard :-D) felt like they were constantly lightly pressed together. Not painful but far from comfortable to wear. Ever since then, the only underwear I use are boxers. I'm wearing black-and-red ones right now. Oh, and just a bit of TMI to horrify (or delight? who knows..) you guys: Since I'm already in bed, that's the only thing I'm wearing. :-D

Yay boob containers!!

I ordered a boob container in my "real" size......I really hope the darn thing fits! I'm SO TIRED of trying on bras- even if the return shipping is free. I just want to not have to return another one.

Ugh I need to buy more bras. Both of my day-to-day ones (my sports bra is fine) have broken in the space of a week; the underwire is poking out quite painfully. For now, I'm wearing them with a plaster stuck over the sticky-out wire so that it doesn't cut into me. The problem is that replacing them requires ordering online, because no shops round here sell my size, and that will cost £55-60. I need to just do it, really.

I went to Lane Bryant yesterday because I needed an off-white camisole, I dug through the clearance underwear bins to see if there was anything I wanted.  Turns out two of the styles in there matched a bra that I own.  This is the first time I have ever owned a matching set, so fancy!

So I have the opposite sock problem of everyone I know. I have so many! I haven't bought socks in years and still I have a stupid amount of pairs! I hardly even wear them, since I usually wear tights in winter and sandals/trainers without socks in summer, and I counted 14 pairs in various colours the other week. I can remember buying 5 pairs of black ones maybe 6 months ago, but this is getting ridiculous. How on earth.

I have a crap ton of socks, but that's because I'm kind of obsessed with them in colder months. I have pairs that I wear with specific shoes (I need thicker ones for a pair of boots that are slightly too big), for specific temps... Socks are awesome.

Kat, I feel that way too! I have one matching set that fits right now and I have one where the bra has gotten too small and it makes me sad and want to buy a matching bra again, but I can't really justify it right now. I like wearing the matching set when I dress up - makes me feel fancier. ^_^ I need to go buy a strapless though...and new spanx... Need to wear them to a wedding in a couple weeks.

When I was in the US last year I discovered American Eagle long cut boxer briefs which are just the most comfortable thing I've ever had on my nethers. I've decided now to just order them in because you can't get them in Australia. Now I tend to wear black almost exclusively so I've decided to start wearing brightly coloured socks and underwear (and to match colours as much as possible). I often get annoyed that men don't get sexy underwear (women get sexy underwear, men just have to be sexy already which is counter to the generally accepted myth that the male body is not attractive and creates a cognitive dissonance but that's for another thread) so I'm at least trying to make my underthings interesting.

So.....aforementioned boob container came in the mail yesterday. It is NOT GOOD. And it is getting returned.

It's supposed to be my "real" size and it still isn't working. I almost started to cry after I put the thing on. It was big, ugly, uncomfortable and still didn't fit right. It was the "Lauren" by Freya in a 36G.

In the last 6 months, I've tried all of the following sizes and met complete and utter failure with each one:

38D (I was wearing this regularly before I tried finding the Right Size)
36DD
36DDD
36G

By process of elimination, I think I'm going to try a 36 or 38F and see how I fare with those. Generally, I'm having 4 problems: gaping at the top of the cups, gore not lying flat, band/underwire digging in and underwire poking through the center gore. With the Freya bra specifically, it was just....huge. Well, huge in the cups but tight in the band. It came almost all the way up to my armpits, all the way around and was just way too...tall...in the front. If I wore even the slightest V neck, it would have shown. For reference, under bust measurement is 37 and bust measurement varies from 42-44, depending on what they feel like doing that day.

I'm currently wearing a 36DDD and it's the best fitting bra I have but it's still not right. The cups feel ok, but the gore is still not lying flat and the band is so tight that it leaves deep marks when I take it off. This goes against what I've read about band sizing!! I read that if the gore doesn't lie flat, you're wearing a size in which the cups are too small but the band is too large. Well.....the cups are constantly feeling too big and the bands are constantly feeling too small! I've tried "balconette" styles and I really like them but it's hard to find ones in the size I need that don't look ridiculous or behave more like a full coverage bra.

Also, the section of the bra where the cup meets the strap does not lie flat either- I can fit 3 fingers between the fabric and my skin. I don't know if this just "happens" or is another indicator that things are Not Right.

I'm about to just give up and start buying XL sports bras for day-to-day use.

Have you been professionally measured at a proper shop? Once you've found a couple of styles that fit well, you can order online but it really is worth going to get properly measured - even if it means travelling a bit of a distance - because as you've discovered there are so many variables! I've never bought a bra without having it fitted; when I get round to ordering the new ones I need I won't be trying them on because they're the same as the ones I've got, but I know they fit.

The only time I was measured was at Victoria's Secret last year and they are bumbling idiots that put me in a $50 bra that didn't fit. It felt like it fit initially but then a month later, I was getting stabbed with underwires.

I think my main worry about getting fitted is feeling pressured to spend a lot of money that I don't have or having that prior incident happen again.  :-\

I feel guilty about going and getting fitted and then buying a bra elsewhere but I just can't afford to buy in a specialty store.

Yeah no, don't go to Victoria's Secret - I don't think they are properly trained (they might be, but I'd imagine they're salespeople rather than fitters).

The problem with getting fitted one place and buying in another is that unless it's an identical model, the fit won't be the same. I'd advise getting one or two well-fitting bras and paying more, instead of getting several cheaper ones that don't fit. But I feel your pain, I pay at least £60 a time to get just two bras that fit and I have to replace them reasonably frequently, at least every year.

I'm just trying to find something at this point that doesn't cause me physical pain. I need it to tide me over until I can afford to buy a really good one. After all my bills are paid, I only have about $20 left each week. Ugh.

Freya definitely has some variation between styles, which is disappointing. I got fitted for a Deco at a bra shop, and got another at Nordstrom before I found them online (shipping is from UK but whatever it takes!). I also have one of their sports bras But then I found a pretty style in my size (!) but it has this ribbon along the edge that creates a "double boob line" on the cup itself! I still wear it, but the weird shape shows through the camis I like to wear this time of year.

Jockey has a new bra out that they fit you for. It might be worth looking into. Also, a lot of specialty bra boutiques have sales racks that you can look through.

Victorias secret, Hanes, and other corporate bra stores generally don't carry any cup size above a DD. Lane Bryant doesn't carry any band size below a 36. This makes it incredibly annoying for my 34E/F self to find a bra that fits.

One thing, when you do get a bra that is your size, your muscles have to readjust to wearing that type of bra (one that is held up by the band instead of by the bra straps). It might take a week or so for your muscles to stop complaining. after that you should be fine.

Oh I know how you feel there too - I'm a 32HH and I suspect soon to be a 30J, because I am losing weight at a rate of knots. I'm not sure that 30J even exists outside Bravissimo.

There's this really handy "other thing" I'm going to write as a footnote to my abstract that I can probably explore these issues in. I think I'll call it my "dissertation."

It does, its just harder to find. idk what stores they use in UK besides bravissimo, but it might be worth looking online.

Bra stop is pretty awesome: http://www.brastop.com/SearchPage.aspx?type=1&size=30J&brand=&colour=&sectionid=&text=
