Even full-time SF authors (at the Asimov level, I mean) resort to hand-waving at times; it could get very tedious if they weren't allowed to!

Yes! And Claire? You're not fifteen any more... I'm not sure if it was Jeph's intention but Claire's frozen expression from panels three to four says to me that nobody is laughing.
