Jeph's comment puts Steve's week-long bender in a new light - he might have been able to do it with only a forty (unless of course those drinks came from a 2litre stein...)

They've talked about it before.
Wow, I'm not sure it's the longest shot of a callback joke in QC, but I'm fairly sure it's in the top five.

Was it what Jeph was alluding to when he said he was browsing through old comics to make sure he had a joke right?

Oh God, to be a lightweight and responsible for this boneyard?  And there's more.  And here, too.

I realize it's just a joke, but it's amusing to think that Steve only sipped at a few appletinis and poured out all those empties so he'd look more manly when Marten inevitably intervened.

That just made me think - what if Steve is actually Marten's BROTHER - but no one actually realizes it?

Yet another amusing thought, and according to this could mean a few things:

That Henry married one or more women before he married Veronica,

AND/OR Henry married one or more women after the divorce/coming out,

OR he got married to other men before proposing to Maurice.

I think I prefer the first option, that he had a string of unsuccessful marriages with women who wanted kids, and maybe Steve and Marten are half-brothers but don't know it yet.
(click to show/hide)

Very silly, but still, amusing.

EDIT - Or that 'blur' in Veronica's life is when she had Steve.

So am I the only one -- yes? well, anyway -- wondering who said what about Hanners, who's on Clinton's left (looked like Hanners' shirt, but she's on a different couch. Gabby?)  and what he would have said, why Cosette is apparently nowhere near Steve, and what Tai would have said about Cosette, and Angus -- well, just wonder about Angus in general? I think he and Faye genuinely enjoy fucking (with) each other.

As far as he knows, perhaps. I get the feeling Jeph writes Veronica as someone who doesn't always ... remember ... to mention certain things. Or remember them.

Gabby's the only one whose skin is that dark, so it's definitely her. I was more wondering what he might have told about her, since he doesn't know her.

Isn't the specific challenge to "say something nice," even if you don't know anything to "tell" about a person? It's a bit of a challenge, but you could at least come up with something superficial, e.g.

CLINTON: Gabby's hair looks nic --
GABBY: It's the HUMIDITY.

Even then, just compare Marten's face and neck from that comic to the last couple.  I didn't realize it until it was pointed out, but yeah, his face and neck used to be thicker.  I kind of like the old style - he still looks skinny, but not almost-emaciated like he does now.

The Tao that is named is not the true Tao.

Very good call-back to the old strip. Just how many shots did Steve have to do as a result of ill-advised thumb-wrestling with a cyborg? Faye + Angus = Awww! There is something scary about espresso machines. They gurgle, fart, and spit in a most bad-tempered manner.

Hmmmmm.
Can somebody with superior archive-fu give me a rough ratio of
people whose coupling is teased for a while, then happens : people whose " " " " " ",  then doesn't happen?

It happened recently with Marten and Padma (which at the time seemed pretty unlikely to actually happen) but then it also sort of happened with Marten and Lt. Potter (which actually didn't happen).

I view Dora and Tai as more of a building up of enough confidence by the characters than a tease from Jeph though. I don't know. :psyduck:

Of course, we could SKIP all the teasing. Next Monday's update: Claire and Marten take Faye's advice to heart; Faye and Angus realize they now have to find a different spot. :P

Also I can't tell whether Claire or Marten is talking in panel 4...

Please, the proper portmanteau name for Faye/Marten is Farten.

Try to be professional.

Seriously though, I love Angus' face  Martens happy-drunk expression in panel 4 is good too.

I love watching the whole in-comic joke, of Marten not being able to so much as glance at a girl without rampart speculation from his friends, getting played out here. It's like art imitating art. Or something.

Things would get really interesting if Claire and Marten didn't want to move, I don't know how the far too intoxicated observers would react to that though.

And the question remains, will Faye ever start drinking in moderation?

I'm guessing the only shipping permitted is to Tuckahoe, NJ (or as far as funding would allow...), yes?

Faye sure knows when to cut in, doesn't she?
And the question remains, will Faye ever start drinking in moderation?
Well, she's not actually holding a bottle in the last panel, so that counts as "moderation" on her behalf.

I'd have thought that making out, or just sitting, on the end of a jetty on a lake after dark would just amount to being a buffet for mosquitoes. Ross River fever; the perfect end to the day.

Obnoxious?  I think she'd be taking Angus with her given how heavily she's leaning on him.

As to the jetty - not so much.  Preferred the porch myself as the chairs were far more comfortable.

I think she was going to say, "I'm kinda jealous." The whole vibe of the conversation was of someone who isn't used to being around so many fun loving people and being accepted like a true friend. I think that's the reason Claire decided to step outside and get some air and would explain what she is talking to Marten about. Of course, here comes Faye and Angus getting ready to have sloppy kisses cutting Claire off. Gotta love it. Also where the heck is Gabby!?
