The Resident Evil Movies
« on: 06 Dec 2012, 12:54 »

So, the Resident Evil movie series has taken up a lot more of my time, and thought processes than I would actually like to admit.  The very short of this, is that I truly dislike what Paul W.S. Anderson has done story-wise, character-wise, and I can't even give him the Michael Bay status, because while he tries for the action sequences that should be amazing, they fall so short, so often that they're not even fun to watch anymore.

I started breaking down the movies, and have come up with so many faux pas, and plot holes, that it boggles the mind.  Sometimes the plot holes are because of the huge separation that the movies plot(s) take from the game plot(s).  Other times, they are simply not actually following suit within the singular movie itself ie: they break their own rules.

I suspect that Anderson is either schizophrenic, ADHD, or some combination thereof, because frankly a normal rational mind could not have taken the existing storyline and twisted it to this level of insane, illogical, or sheer stupidity.  I used to think that Uwe Boll was the worst director (in particular for the video game to movies genre), but I have changed that opinion - for the simple fact that Anderson KEEPS GETTING FUNDED.  I mean, who looks at what he's made, and thinks, "Yep, let's get that guy, because he is fucking phenomenal!"  Or even "Yep, he's written another golden one, let's throw our fucking money at this beautiful sonofabitch!"  I know, I know, he makes a fuckton of cash, and the RE series alone is insanely successful, despite being fucking awful.  Obviously, that speaks volumes to those doing the funding, a great ROI.

The things that I don't like about what he's done are myriad, but the simple one word answer is this: Alice.

Because of his dedication to this character, we get every other character from the game series being upstaged, being outdone, sometimes just straight out giving up their own actions and mannerisms so that Alice can use them, because she obviously can do this better than anyone else ever could.  Why should the characters that the gamers know and love get any credit or worthwhile character development?  That would take away from Alice's face time.  And goddamnit, people pay to see her.  I do wonder, what will happen when they stop?

Anyway, in case it's not obvious, I just watched the latest installment of the series, and though I no longer pay for them, I am ashamed to say that I have seen them all.  I guess I can't help myself, because I honestly wouldn't mind if these movies were NAMED anything else.  I once suggested that they should be called "Alice vs Umbrella" because that would be a much more accurate reflection of their focus.  They simply are not, and never were to me, Resident Evil.

Anyone else?  Or am I the only one, and I'm just being a fuckwit?

Nah, you're right. These are some pretty terrible movies. I found the first one to be pretty entertaining, not necessarily good, but the rest are utter garbage in every way.

Nope, there are no Resident Evil movies. Nononononononono no! *Sticks his fingers in his ears, closes his eyes and goes lalalala very loud*

Seriously, I love the games, but I hate the films with a passion.

I guess I should also make a distinction - I am referring here to the Live Action movies that Paul W.S. Anderson is responsible for.  I actually quite enjoy Degeneration and Damnation, the two animated features.  They seem to have captured the characters and feel of the games very well.

I guessed as much.

Degeneration was good, especially if you imagine it as Die Hard 2 with zombies. And there's a few good laughs (Zombie falling off the plane)

But as it is, I completely ignore the live action films, to the point where I refuse their existence.

I can't stand the Anderson movies, even the first one which everyone gives a pass, I find awful. I've only seen two of them and bits of the others but they are just trash, I can't understand why they keep getting made. Are Anderson and Milla Jovovich just bored? Do they sit on the couch with nothing to do, just look at eachother and say "...wanna make a movie?"
