So I'm quitting smoking

As any smoker can tell you, that's not helpful. Because it's not an "allure".
It's a fucking addiction.
Gareth, there will be times when you backslide. I'm guessing it's not just the work stress, but a few other more personal stresses as well. That's one of the biggest nicotine triggers there is.
Get your head in a better place, and have another go. Quitting is a long term commitment, and like any long term commitment, it will have rocky periods. Just remember, you can always go back to quitting, the same as you went back to smoking.
You can do it, man. My wife of the two pack a day habit for over 30 years is six weeks without a cig, and taking the first step down on the patches.
Doesn't mean she wasn't hard to live with for a bit...

....Well no, because you're not a smoker.
Carl, you're right. I keep finding reasons to smoke and I need to stop doing that. I did go at this with willpower alone before and it worked for a while. I just need to switch it off again like I did before.
Aethien:
I tried smoking though. It just didn't do anything for me.

That it didn't do anything for you should have given you a great high. On the other hand, did you inhale? If you didn't, don't go back and try it again, please!
I started smoking at 19. Two months after I started, a "friend" in the dorm asked me if I was ever going to start inhaling. So I started, and smoked for the next 20 years.
Carl-E:
I tried it. Couldn't get past the taste.
I've smoked a few other things, though...
