So I'm quitting smoking

<< < (27/49) > >>

Thrillho:
We have a new interim manager at work who I fucking hate and she is about 90% of the reason I haven't quit altogether yet.

Carl-E:
"interim" is good.  Let's hope that part doesn't change.

Redball:

--- Quote from: sitnspin on 14 Mar 2013, 15:22 ---I started smoking when I was 14. I have managed to go from a pack and a half a day to a pack a week.  It was partly discipline, partly use of "electronic cigarettes" and partly changes in my stress levels. During the height of my smoking habit I was going through serious emotional and psychological issues (which is what lead to me starting) and the smoking helped calm me down. Years of therapy, meditation and yoga later and I am in a much healthier headspace which has made reducing the amount I smoke much easier. Now I pretty much just smoke when I like it rather than because I "need" it.

--- End quote ---
My fear for anyone who's mostly quit is that under stress, it may be easier to resume. Is it possible to quit completely?

Me: Hi. My name is Bob. I'm a smokaholic. I quit in 1977 after 30 pack years.
Group: Hi, Bob!

Carl-E:
It is.  Both my parents started in high school, and my mother was at a pack a day, my father at about a pack and a half when the surgeon general's first warning came out in the 60's.  I think I was about 5.

They both quit cold turkey, and neither ever went back to it, even under extreme duress.  That's over 45 years now.

Of course, they had each other for support, and a really annoying kid running around begging them to "kick the habit".

I told my first wife I wouldn't marry her until she had given up smoking.  She did give up; but twenty years later I found that she was smoking a bit secretly, I don't know for how long, and when we split up she made rather a show of smoking publicly.  She has since given up completely.  It really does seem rather complicated to predict how it will go.
