snow and freezing rain where I am.  The snow it slushy now but everything is glazed in thick ice.

That is when the fun starts.

On another note - there was a major snowstorm that hit my hometown in Racine on Sunday. Huge accident on the main freeway that essentially bisects the county. At least one person dead in the accident, tons of others hurt, and somehow someone lost their dog in the whole thing.

The freeway is still "rural" in that part of the county, though there's more in the way of population down there than there is up here where I live now. They had to divert traffic off the main Interstate and onto the side frontage road five miles to the north.

Up here, we're starting our crazy mid-January weather patterns - drop below zero during the night, and then when it starts to warm up in the morning, flurries hit. As an idea: it's currently right at 0°F; it's supposed to get down to -15°F for a low this evening; then - as it warms up to 8°F tomorrow, it's supposed to snow in the morning. Add in 14 mph winds, which make the wind chill OMGWTFFMAO, and you get what a "Tuesday in North Central Wisconsin" is like.

Hey, I lived on a gravel road where the township used a grader to do that.

Mind you, there wasn't a stoplight in the township...

...Yes? They use those - and front end loaders - to clear our parking lot.

Yesterday I overheard someone compare the weather to "The Frozen 9th circle of Hell" from Dante's Inferno. Very apt comparison considering all the damn ice. I wish there'd been some snow to make things pretty.

Just like my ice-scraper, my windshield wipers have fallen victim to the freezing rain. This morning they were frozen to my windshield. When I tried to pull one off, the rubber part came clean off the rest of the blade and stayed stuck to the glass. The other one didn't fare too well either. A lesson to anyone who is considering just buying the cheapest wiper blades in the shop like I did.

There are times I wonder if the prophets and all from the OT got it wrong: hell isn't a burning lake of fire. It's -40°F forever.

Naw see that all the time.  More for parking lots maybe, since we generally need snowplow/sander/slater combo, but still, nothing overly unusual there.

It actually got cold here for the last couple of days! All the way down to -7C (19.4F) during the day. Everyone was complaining about the cold, but it was completely clear skies so at least we didn't have to worry about snow. Though having an actual snow day would make my entire life have meaning.

Mhmm. Just remember kids, when our parents were young (Well. Those of us belonging to Gen X and the Millennials any way) the freak out du jour was human induced global cooling.

Snowing and raining, and generally sucking is the weather here.

when our parents were young [...] the freak out du jour was human induced global cooling.

I guess I fit that demographic, so I'll bite - our freak-out was not climatic at all; it was the imminence of global nuclear war and the likely long-term effects (including the so-called "nuclear winter").

My awareness of the environment (in this sense) was at that time limited to stuff about the Romans growing vines in England (which restarted last century after being impractical for over a millennium); changes in sea level (as the British Isles tilted) causing the Isle of Thanet (part of Kent) to change from being an island as it was in Roman times to being part of the mainland; and the river Thames at London freezing over in Tudor times sufficiently for bonfires to be built on it to roast oxen (I saw it frozen right across in my childhood as far downstream as Reading, 40 miles from London, but not strongly enough to walk on, let alone build a bonfire).

And nuclear winter, as mentioned above.

Where I live, snow is known as the white death. People panic in droves just to pick up days worth of supplies as though they were stocking up their bunkers for the cold war. Kid you not, people around here are scared to death of the snow, to the point that it is funny.

It wad 42C (about 108F) in the city today... The BOM rep on the news this evening said that so far 2013 has been the hottest year in Sydney since records began. And January is usually the hottest month of the year; I wonder if we'll top 45C?

Meanwhile, we've been at pretty much the opposite end of the spectrum up here. We've been getting down to -24ºC (-12ºF) a couple of times this month, and those are normally January and February temps.

An exceptionally warm winter here so far. We got a little bit of sleet once in late October, but no snow since, and the daytime highs in low 40s (= +5 degrees Celsius). Looks like chances of skiing this year will be low. OTOH the roads are clear of ice, so I could ride my bike to work (if/when so inclined). Also the winter-orienteering season feels a lot more inviting now than the last couple of seasons.

-7 F, and my car's battery has decided to throw in the towel. Barely made it past 3 years, even. For shame.

And, the annoying part of a 19.5:1 compression diesel engine with nice high current glow plugs... the OE battery is an 80 Ah, 790 CCA monster. Basically, big, heavy, and expensive.

Wife didn't have to go into work yesterday. She won't have to go in until this afternoon.

It didn't occur to me to try to start her car yesterday.

I did so this morning.

Dead as a doornail.

Oh, by the way - my car's thermometer said "-22°F" all the way home from work.
