The land is inhospitable because the flora and fauna all hate you and there is never any rain.

Still the country with the only poisonous mammals. Also your birds are cute when they aren't being eaten by Orb Weavers the size of delivery trucks.

There are some other venomous mammals, but the ones I'm thinking of off the top of my head live in Cuba, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic, and not on the mainlands of the Americas.
