Mini Painting!

GarandMarine:
If I go I'll be working. So I probably won't bother bringing an army.

Grognard:
ok. you can't work ALL convention.  I'll bring the Shine and enough Calanners for you to run a star.
fource some fun on you yet.

GarandMarine:
Hahah for sure. I'll probably throw my Germans in the car if I'm done painting them by then. If not, the Soviets will come along just in case.

Neko_Ali:
And such is one of the reasons I feel uncomfortable with historical games, especially recent history like WWII to present.  To much living memory history there. The other reason being that if I was going to do a historical army, I would want it to be accurate, which conflicts with my desire to be creative and stylized. I don't mind doing a Celtic themed army... but I wouldn't want to actually paint up a bunch of Celts, or Irish units or anything like that. Plus I tend to go for a cleaner, slightly simplified paint look instead of trying to weather my stuff and make it look realistic.

Normally I stick to pure fantasy or Sci Fi miniature games for those reason. DUST looks pretty cool, and Tannhauser. But to me they perch to close to the sci fi/historical line for comfort...

GarandMarine:
I find there's a level of creativity in making historical units look good, bringing them to life if you will. It's just a different kind of creativity. It's still quite satisfying to me to put a well painted unit of say, T-34/85s down on the table as it does a squad of Space Marines from my custom chapter. Weathering certainly isn't mandatory either.

Otherwise though... I find the military history of the second world war is something I can be very passionate about, I had relatives involved in both sides, I grew up with bedside stories about Tarawa and Saipan, not from the man himself sadly as he died before I was born, but it's family history for me, and even though the 70th anniversery of D-day is this year, and we're a full century away from the Great War's start, that history is very much a living, breathing thing. I think all the books, movies, shows, model kits and games like Flames all contribute to preserving and making that history live on past the generation that lived it, a generation which is quickly passing on from us. That's the thing to keep seperated with games like Flames, it is not history, it is inspired by history. Our books are chock full of history in every page, we employ a massive historical research team just to make sure we're on point, but the game is not history, and the history is not the game.

Re: DUST, I'd give it a second look in the next month or two Neko, there's gonna be some sick new starter sets coming out. Having read up on the plot and rules now, personally, I think it's far enough removed as to be more comparable to 40s and 50s pulp fiction and WW2 era Captain America comics. I mean for gods sakes the Axis (no longer Nazis) have zombies and intelligent gorillas fighting on their side and all the tech is based on alien tech recovered from a crash site or something ridiculous like that haha.
