Second-to-last-panel Marten is hilarious/adorable.

@ concept that the Steve panel was a dream: mind = blown
But WHO'S dream? >:D

Could have been Claire's dream, if you think back to the beach party she was willing to pay Cosette for something (Can't remember exactly)
And just for that reason Jephlizabeth will say it was Marten's :P

EDIT: ok, I guess autocorrect picked that up from my sig quote. But w/e, I'm keeping it :P

It's Steve's dream. When you're a secret agent, you dream of a life of simple domesticity where you can eat your breakfast without being attacked by ninjas.

That's a good cover story.

...No, wait, it actually isn't. It's a really lousy cover story. So lousy that it may in fact be reverse psychology - nobody would believe an active agent had such a lame cover, so they figure it must be true. Yes, it's so stupid it's brilliant!

Does not compute. Most cats emphatically DON'T LIKE to be hugged for extended periods of time and they will make it known, should you attempt to do so. Probably with making a bloodbath out of your hands.
In fairness, most cats are not all cats.  My critter is not only perfectly ok being treated like a stuffed animal at night, he gets kind of pissy if I want some space.

Yes and yes.

Thinking bubbles are fun for everywhere, i'm thinking of just attaching headgear to my head with a giant whiteboard one, just really mess around with people.

So yes, What are the odds Claire will bring up how "Comfy" marten was to sleep on?

I don't think this is the start of where Marten starts to have feelings for Claire. I think that he enjoyed having someone next to him through out the night and misses the feeling of being in a relationship.

That's honestly a possible explanation.  Dude hasn't been with anyone since Padma.  I mean, we all saw how...awkardly painful he tried to come on to Lt. Potter. :psyduck: Damn son, was that embarrassing to see.  I think he wants companionship in an intimate way subconsciously.  He shouldn't use Claire for that comfort though.  Again, they're perfect as friends with the trust.  Mentorish is Marten.  Heck, there's honestly been more to go on of Marten and Hanners something in the distant future.

At any rate, rant over.  Marten doesn't look sad.  Dude looks confused.  He might think the Tequila-monster/Whiskey-monster gave him a weird dream.  Or as someone noted, why the heck didn't you tuck the poor sap in!

The ambiguity in today's comic is killing me. Why does he make us wait for another 24 hours? Why?

Totally agree.

All the people who are saying Jeph's stopped trolling us... I dunno about that - this is just a different form of cruel torture if you ask me. :-D

I can't decide if Marten looks surprised or disappointed. Possibly a bit of both. I think any disappointment is likely because he misses being in a relationship though. I never saw feelings beyond friendship for Claire in him before - but who know what will happen, now that the seed of the idea has been planted in his brain...  :-P

Jeph said once that he dislikes them in most cases because they're too "static".

Hugging a cat is indeed something not to try, but cats will hug people, and will certainly snuggle close and address cuddling needs that way. Our late cat used to approach family members who were lying down and nestle between their arm and their torso, resting her paws on their shoulder.

You haven't seen the backlash against Oatmeal for making a comic involving raping the F5 key (basically a shitstorm around "trivializing sexual assault"), and that's not actual sexual assault.

Jeph's comic was an actual joke about sexual assault, and I'm sure he didn't want a horde of people blaming him for perpetuating rape culture.

But the joke was made, years ago, and seems to have been changed quite recently. It's also the poor editing job I take offense to, but mostly what's said is said and it's dishonest to pretend otherwise. Also changing the word didn't make the jokingly suggested action less nonconsensual.

I don't see how that's an issue at all. It's Jeph's comic, it's a fictional work and he can say whatever he pleases. It isn't being censored externally and it is easily accessible from internet archives without attempts to "censor" the old version out of existence from Jeph. Are you saying it's immoral for authors to publish edited versions of their own works? That rewriting something to better suit how you want it is wrong? I guess I should leave all the English-fails in when dealing with old bits I've written too, then. After all, I didn't know better at the time.

The old version is really uncomfortable. There's a vast difference between a statement that shy, submissive people want to be raped and that they'd fantasize about being with a dominant partner. Those two are not close experiences at all.

How has no one noticed that when he went to bed, Marten had only 1 button undone, but when he woke up he had two.

Jeph wouldn't make such a variation without intent, I think.

So the true insight on the comic is not that there is UST or such (unresolved sexual tension) but rather that Claire most likely snuck her hand into his shirt at some point, or was undressing him in general.  Going off of her facial expression and response, I'd bet that she hopes he some how doesn't know, but by his inspection I imagine he does.

Then again, I'm a Marten / Dora shipper.

Number of buttons undone by comic:

2406: 2
2405, before they even got in the HOTEL ROOM: 2

So......lack of awkward wakeups in this comic means Marten stressing out about it for the next week?

Or maybe Claire avoids him out of embarrassment and that just makes him more awkward because, lets face it, it's Marten. That's his thing.

Marten doesn't even have a stuffed animal to cuddle. He must be in a state of deprivation. Dora has Mieville, Faye had her stuffed giraffe, but all Marten has is a lump of hard plastic.

Are you calling Claire a "lump of hard plastic"?  :psyduck:

Vibrator? Sex toy? Pintsize?

What hotels have you been in? The last one I was in had curtains that almost made me late one day by an hour cause it blocked out a good portion of the sunlight. Okay, given I was in the Metropolitain area and the sun/window alignment was off by a compass point.....

I really hope that Jeph doesn't do a "... and it was all a dream" about the cuddling bit, since that's such a cop out that I got criticised for using it in a story when I was a schoolboy, many years ago.

Neither of my cats like being held much, let alone cuddling.  One is relaxed about it, but clearly not a fan, and the other doesn't like it, but I've managed to get to the stage where she'll let me pick her up, and not struggle too much.  She was a stray feral kitten when I got her, so not probably not socialised early on.  Having said that, overnight I'll often find her asleep on my bed, hard up against me, albeit on top of the duvet.
