He pronounces it "jif". Word of god, and all that.

The quark suffered a similar fate, being pronounced qu-ah-rk instead of the intended qu-or-rk.

<shrug> That's just the way it goes. And of course the OED is merely doing its job of recording usage, not mandating it.

Those pronunciations of quark are nearly identical though. Certainly closer than other words with multiple pronunciations - say for example "vase" (VAZE vs vahzze)
