I agree. I actually think it's a very clever move by Jeph to make Clinton perform this faux pas. It's creating some interesting opportunities for character development AS WELL as getting Marten and Claire to talk about their nocturnal snuggles.

Not necessarily - Claire told Clinton that she didn't think that Marten even knew it happened, and that he didn't do anything weird. And, he's certainly got a glare going on, although I'm not sure if that's at Claire or Marten, or if he was trying to mess with Claire's head, or both Claire and Marten's heads.

But that's exactly what this sentence tells us. Clinton obviously thinks that Marten remembers the cuddles, despite Claire's assumption he doesn't; otherwise there would be nothing to thank Marten for, because then the reason for not mentioning them would not be chivalry, but simply lack of knowledge.

To reword this: By thanking Marten, Clinton implies that Marten committed an act that is worthy of thanks, which wouldn't be the case in a universe where Marten doesn't remember the night.

Either that or Clinton didn't think that far.

No there wasn't. In fact there wasn't even a Starship Troopers 1; that was literally another movie until Paul verhoeven was told by the studio "your film is called starship troopers now, change it" about halfway through production.
Which is why it (and its sequels) bears no resemblance to the book beyond there being spaceships and bug aliens. The CGI animated series was by far the superior product.

And this is why, if you really want something kept a secret, you tell NO ONE ELSE. For all the MartenxClaire shippers; you'd do well to remember that Jeph uses Marten's love life as an instrument of torture, both on Marten AND on us readers, especially shippers. Based on his history of depicting Marten's love life so far, he'll either string us along for as long as possible before shooting down in flames all possibility of anything more than friendship happening between them (like with Faye and Lt. Potter), or he'll have them get into a brief relationship which then ends in an abrupt fashion that leaves the shippers wailing and gnashing their teeth (Dora, Padma).
