Thrillho:
I saw Endgame today finally.

Will be back later with thoughts. I thought it was about as fair to women as it was possible to be with the character setup it was given from a decade of movies that started before the really quite recent massive upswing in feminism.

I'm going to be honest here: I have heard enough about Endgame to realize that there was a reason why I really stopped following Marvel Comics back in the 1990's.

The way they deal with multiverses and Alternate Timelines makes DC's Crisis on Alternate Earths look positively sane by comparison. I just recall all the things with the X-Men and how things got so out of hand you forgot what the team looked like this month, and I suddenly realized that this was exactly what they were doing in the MCU.

The more you mess with timelines, the more unwatchable/unreadable a universe becomes. The only fictional franchise where it's worked is the one that intentionally hand-waves it away with a flick of a sonic screwdriver and a whirr of the TARDIS. Not even Star Trek does it well (oh, hai, Discovery!).

Marvel Comics FUBAR'ed the comics up with alternate universes and timelines. Doing that to resolve the Ultimate Bad Ending issue makes it head-bangingly frustrating.

Just my $0.02.

Stuff is going to get weird.

(click to show/hide)No. I don't think so.

I can't see them going for a multiverse. That seems to be the schtick for DC's tv series. But I can see the last snap opening up different dimensions and allowing for the possibility of the Negative Zone and allow Marvel to introduce Annihilus to the MCU.

Although what is more likely is that the Kree will become more involved in Earth and see it as a target, as not only did they repel the Chitauri in 2012, but have just defeated and killed Thanos and his forces. To the Kree that will probably mark the Earth as a threat to them, especially as Captain Marvel is from there and the Skrulls are no doubt still around.

At the moment, the rumoured Phase 4 MCU films are a Black Widow film (possibly a prequel or intequel between Infinity War and Endgame), Black Panther 2, Doctor Strange 2, Shang Chi and the Eternals, as well as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. And my guess is that Eternals will be the lynchpin film of Phase 4, much the same way that Avengers was for Phase 1 and Age of Ultron for Phase 2.

Kevin Fiege did say in 2017 that they were planning 20 films after Endgame, which means we're looking at another 14 unannounced films. However, I don't think we're going to the X-Men or Fantastic Four just yet. The Fox X-Men films have been less than stellar for several reasons (save for Deadpool and Logan) and the Fantastic Four still leaves a bitter taste in people's mouths after the 2015 film, Josh Trank's career as a director still hasn't recovered. I imagine it'll be a few years before we see either franchise taking their place in the MCU.

That said, Marvel have gone with their big name franchise with the Avengers, building them up for the last 22 films. Their story has been told. And with that in mind, I would imagine that Marvel will go for the less well known teams in their stable, like they did with the Guardians of the Galaxy. Hence why they seem to be following up the Avengers with the Eternals. Just off the top of my head, there's the Squadron Supreme, the Young Gods (which could tie in with Thor), Cadre-K (Skrull mutants), Midnight Sons (horror themed heroes such as Werewolf by Night and Michael Morbius) and Exiles (which if Marvel did go with the multiverse, would be a good way to look at that).

Of course, given that Kevin Fiege said there are 20 films in development, that's all up in the air and with the Fox acquisition, Marvel might decide to start milking those cash cows once again.

(click to show/hide)There is no multiverse element to Endgame although the logical consequences of non-causal strategies are significant plot issues and, of course, tactical time travel is used by both sides only without creating any seen alternate time-lines worth mentioning.
