Method of Madness:
Well that's...disappointing.

Edguy:
So, I watched Age of Ultron yesterday. It was spectacular, but it had way too many characters and plot arcs to handle for just a little over two hours. The movie was so chock full of stuff that I find it hard to decide how much I actually liked it. This could actually have benefited from being a two part movie, I think. A lot of things felt rushed.

One thing I can say for sure, is that it was never going to live up the ridiculous hype I had built up for myself  :-D

I still think Winter Soldier is the best movie of Phase 2, but Age of Ultron definitively was a spectacular event movie. There's so much action and visuals that it almost felt tiring at points. Another reason this could have been a two part movie, giving it some more time to breathe. Props for giving Hawkeye some more spotlight tho. Also a pretty genre savvy movie, which is always great!

BenRG:
Just came back from watching Age of Ultron and, honestly, I think that I was watching a different movie from all the reviewers that I've read so far. Maybe it's because I'm not an expert in the motion picture arts medium. Maybe I don't know what officially makes a good story but I liked it!

A nice balance between characterisation and action. The plan was always clear and the path was obvious. The surprises were nicely paced and I felt that the introduction of the new characters was done well.

One thing though - It isn't a stand-alone. Since the end of The Avengers, you need to have seen or at least be aware of the plot of the Phase 2 movies to understand what is going on. I suppose remembering when the Infinity Stones came around for the first time in the comics helps. I know exactly what those things are and what the stakes are here. I know exactly who Thanos is and what he wants. I suppose that it makes it easier for me to understand that broader thread and Age of Ultron's place in the development of this overall story.

Next up is CA3 - Civil War. I wonder if that will be where Chris Evans checks out of the MCU? He has said that he wants to focus on directing rather than acting.

Edguy:
Ok, some spoiler discussion..

(click to show/hide)First a couple of questions; why were Stark suddenly flying around as Iron Man with the Avengers at the start of the movie? Last time we saw him, he blew up all his suits and sort of retired. We never got anything saying he was back being Iron Man?!

Second; Thor mentioned that they were aware of four Infinity Stones, and by that implying he's aware of the events of Guardians of the Galaxy. Does he know about space stuff in Earth's realm (I'm slightly fuzzy on how space works in the Marvel universe..), or did he just see that it existed during his dream/hallucination/trip?

Also, about random journey with the scientist dude.. That felt kinda misplaced. It's quite obvious that a lot was cut from that, like the black chick(?) we saw in the trailer. Could probably have cut that entire arc, but I guess that would have left som of the plot open?!?

I feel like the movie would have benefited from removing the twins, as they aren't really essential to the plot. The movie is chock full of characters, so if we removed them, then maybe The Vision could have arrived earlier, and he could have worked with Ultron in the begining. That way we could have had more Vision/Ultron scenes, and those were glorious. They were pretty much there just because Whedon is a fan of the characters, and so that he could kill off someone.

The other obvious solution to the movie being too stuffed would have been to make it a two-parter. I honestly think that would have helped it a lot. There's enough action scenes to fill two, three and maybe four blockbusters, and that way they could have fleshed out the character moments and given the action some time to breathe. And made even more money.

But enough gripes. Vision and Ultron were great, especially their screen time together (bar that first scene of two light balls talking to each other). Hawkeye carried the movie, and I loved the development and screen time he got. Jeremy Renner is a solid actor, and a really funny guy. Had a lot of funny meta jokes.

Generally I think the humor was spot on, like expected from Whedon. Especially Ultron was surprisingly funny, like when he cuts of Klaw's arm and goes all "Oh sorry, that'll grow back right?!"

Thor, as well, was really funny. Possibly the funnies guy in the movie. Generally, there were A LOT of funny little moments and dialogue!

BenRG:
Regarding Thor and the Infinity Stones:

Remember that Thor is an alien. Although the Asgard present themselves as gods on occasion, they are actually an ancient race space-travelling immortals. It's just that they use the Bifrost (space bridge) and other Clarketech pseudo-magic to get around rather than space-ships.

(click to show/hide)Now, the Infinity Gems are old and have been around for a long while. In the comics, they are said to pre-date the universe itself. Waaay back in Thor 1, we see a distinctive gauntlet in Odin's treasure trove of alien weapons. That gauntlet was designed to house the six Infinity Gems and allow them to be used by a single wielder. Because of that, we can be sure that Thor knows of them; he was probably told the story of how his father acquired that device many times as a child. It is also probable that he knows of Thanos and his race, the Titans (another race of super-aliens, actually mostly white hats,  who masquerade as gods when it suits them).
(click to show/hide)The side-quest with Thor is needed to explain how he knew how to make Vision work. By realising that Loki's staff contained the Mind Stone, it let him know how to activate the body Ultron had created in a way that was not automatically a threat to all life. It also was needed to explain how he'd realised that these ancient weapons were slowly working their way back into circulation again.
So, finally, an MCU Phase 3 begins! A prediction:
(click to show/hide)Phase 3 will be subtitled 'Infinity Crusade' and it will mostly about heroes trying and failing to stop Thanos getting hold of the gems, one by one. Then he'll turn up in Infinity War, Part 1 and proclaim himself a living god and Death's truest avatar.
