I'm going the lazy route, my dad broke his yamaha guitalele and there's a telecaster bridge lying around somewhere in the house.

Lipstick pickups for 10 euros, unfinished job lot violin neck bought for 20 euros. Now it's a two week wait.

I can agree with you on the playing bit, and the sound bit to a degree. Matt used to have the same model that Jimmy Page used for "White Summer/Black Mountain Side" in that one dope-ass recording for BBC, and the neck felt super square and uncomfortable. And the pickup switching was terrible, each individual pickup was super quiet and then you'd put it to both pickups and all of a sudden it gets super fucking loud, how does that even make sense at all? and it's like that on every Dano.

I like the awkward squarish neck. Somehow I play faster on mine than anything else.

Perhaps it ruined me as a guitarist though, since it was my first instrument.

I wouldn't mind it as much if only I could have the volume be even when using one OR both pickups. I'm switching sides, the neck's okay but the wiring is bullshit. the pickups are great, too, so wtf.

I just keep mine permanently in bridge setting, switching to middle for lead parts. Works surprisingly well!

There are some Reverend models that look like the Starcaster that I'd rather have. I trust Reverend's quality control WAYYYYYYYYYYY more than I trust Fender's. They come perfectly set up from the factory. Freakin' love Reverends, that's going to be my next guitar purchase.

I still don't see anything Starcastery in there. I see offsets, and I see something that looks like a Gibson Barney Kessel, but no Starcastery thingies.

My good friend Jesse asked me for the reasons why I hate Floyd Rose bridges, and here they are for your reading pleasure.

• I despise setting them up because it's too much of a pain in the ass. I like a challenge, but I hate exercises in futility.


• If you bend a note and play another string as a two-note chord, the un-bent note is going to be flat, because the Floyd Rose will sympathetically relax the tension on the other strings if one string is bent (because the bent string is more tense).


• They're clunky as fuck (heavy).


• If you install a Floyd Rose on a guitar that didn't already have one, you have to do a lot of cutting, and if there's one thing that pisses me off, it's people who cut into priceless guitars like a '59 Les Paul (yep, I've seen it) or a '52 Telecaster (yep, seen that too).


• Only shredder faggots use Floyd Rose bridges: Steve Vai, John Petrucci, Joe Satriani, Buckethead, Herman Li of Dragonforce, the list goes on and on.
• Impossible to intonate.


• There's no such thing as a tasteful vibrato when using a Floyd Rose, it's made specifically so that you dive-bomb the fuck out of notes and then rollercoaster back up into them.


• The tuning system is the 6 twistable pegs on the bridge, and if you want to go from standard tuning to drop D, you have to unscrew the screw that holds that low E string using an allen key, tune it down to drop D, then RETUNE EVERY FUCKING STRING ON THE GUITAR over and over and over and over and over until they're all in tune again (the reason for retuning all the other strings was covered in Reason #2).


• The break angle of the bridge (where the string is bent over the saddle) is relatively acute (mathematically speaking, it's an obtuse angle, but it is more acute than, say, the break angle of any fixed bridge), so when you divebomb a note and then come back up, you're straightening and flexing a string over and over, and that leads to frequent string breakage.


• Those god damn tremolo arms are always swinging around and I can never fucking find them.


• All that fucking business on the bridge makes it real scratchy when I try to palm mute.

Floyds fucking suck. I'm all about dem Bigsbys though. They're everything a Floyd isn't.  Also a giant hunk of metal on the back of a guitar helps when it tends to neckdive (*cough* goddammitgibson *cough*).

Thanks. It's mad overkill in terms of the music that I play with the band I play in right now, but it does leave me more possibilities with how I want to play things. Also, I've found that the deepest string on any extended range sounds a little weakish compared to the others. On my five strings, that string is the B string, which we obviously use quite a lot. On this axe it's the F# string, so it has a sexy sexy sound on the B string, even when tuned lower.

As for the Floyd bridges, both of our guitar players dislike them. We do a fair bit of retuning between songs (We've got tunes in standard, drop D, Drop C and drop A#) and as someone else said, they're a pain for that.

On that note, I honestly hate retuning in the middle of a set. I've only done it once and I'd rather just have a backup in a specific tuning.

Hah. I don't tune my own bass down. Least not the F# string. Our guitar player has an eight string that he keeps in drop E, but mostly if I tune the bass differently, I'll tune the B string to C to make my life easier, or A# for the song that's in drop A#.
