The poll who would be discussion thread
« on: 16 Jun 2013, 11:54 »

Since Jwhouk already made a thread (we really need to communicate better about these things, I thought I was taking over for the summer so he could take a break), I'll throw up the poll I had mostly thought out here. Enjoy.

I posit that with minor outliers, all places are equally undangerous, so I chose "anywhere".

B-but that's reasonable and logical! You can't do that!

Home. Parents are tragically dangerous to a child's well being. Especially the well-meaning ones

Modern parents spend far too much time and energy teaching their offspring to be good little children these days, when they really ought to be teaching them to be good adults.

I just realised I have chosen the wrong answer. The correct answer would have been "candy van", because candy is bad for their teeth!

School - it combines any dangers they find for themselves with the dangers that dozens of other children find for them.

I'm going with the car ride option - it's also equally dangerous for the sanity of the adult driving...

Sorry about the lack of communication, Westrim. You can definitely take next week's.

My schedule is such that it might be hard for me to make the WCDT every other week. I'm off every other weekend (this weekend is it, of course), but the other weekends are the ones where I'm very likely (unfortunately) to get hit with "required additional hours of work".

I can take the rest of this month off, and someone can take the WCDT for the first week of July?

That is one of the better insights I've read this year.

Arguably it has been worse in the past, at least in some parts of society; for instance, "children should be seen and not heard" is an old sentiment.

No worries, I wasn't clear either and should have checked since it was different from previous practice. So okay, I'll start the thread the next two weeks.

So, what do accidents and/or children in the front seat cause?

Accidents anywhere can cause children.

Come to think of it, children anywhere can cause accidents...

At one point, we started making our daughter tell the ER staff what had happened, because we were afraid that they wouldn't believe us anymore...

ER doc: "How did this happen?"
Daughter: "I fell off the fire hydrant."
ER doc: "What were you... how did you... ???... never mind."

I do remember as a kid once managing to injure myself in a literal padded room at LACMA. I found a staple the hard way.

Do you mind if I ask why you were in a padded room in the first place? I'll understand if you don't want to talk about it, of course...

I was curious, so I googled "LACMA". I had correctly guessed "Los Angeles County", but hadn't expected the last two letters to stand for "Museum of Art".

Why was there a padded room in an art museum? If you have to ask, you just don't get modern art.

I decided to look up "lacma padded room" and found it as part of an exhibit called Made in California: NOW that was explicitly kid friendly. It was open from September 2000 through September 2001, so how's that for timing.

Here's a short entry about the room itself.
http://web.archive.org/web/20100714004309/http://www.lacma.org/MICnow/artists/Kaprow/kaprows.htm
Here's videos of the exhibit in glorious 2000 240x180. The room is part 5.

So it was basically part of helping kids appreciate art and burn off energy by finally getting to literally bounce off the walls so their parents could look at stuff. It was apparently designed by a father and son art team. I recall pillow fighting with my dad, jumping off the ladder, and generally having fun until I had to pull him away because the museum was closing.

Ahhh, that makes sense.

Eh, it was just a scratch, not full on bleeding, and it wasn't reported or anything. If I recall correctly, I was trying to find their moor points when it happened, so I was digging behind where I shouldn't have.
