The poll who would be discussion thread

Zebediah:
I was curious, so I googled "LACMA". I had correctly guessed "Los Angeles County", but hadn't expected the last two letters to stand for "Museum of Art".

Why was there a padded room in an art museum? If you have to ask, you just don't get modern art.

I decided to look up "lacma padded room" and found it as part of an exhibit called Made in California: NOW that was explicitly kid friendly. It was open from September 2000 through September 2001, so how's that for timing.

Here's a short entry about the room itself.

Here's videos of the exhibit in glorious 2000 240x180. The room is part 5.

So it was basically part of helping kids appreciate art and burn off energy by finally getting to literally bounce off the walls so their parents could look at stuff. It was apparently designed by a father and son art team. I recall pillow fighting with my dad, jumping off the ladder, and generally having fun until I had to pull him away because the museum was closing.

Ahhh, that makes sense.

They must have been bummed when you managed to get hurt anyway.  :-(

Eh, it was just a scratch, not full on bleeding, and it wasn't reported or anything. If I recall correctly, I was trying to find their moor points when it happened, so I was digging behind where I shouldn't have.
