In the same sense that one might say "Intercourse in the missionary position for the purpose of reproduction" to describe lack of variety from what is common. Not literally that.
In any case I find it a largely useless term with loads of personal bias from whoever says it with regards to sex/romance. Less so in regards to unmodified applications, which I use it for too, but etymologically that's a weird use. :-P
