Sam's well past the age where she'd need/desire an extra parent in the full sense of the term most likely. So I don't think that's really a consideration. I have no doubt that Sam would appreciate another woman around besides our favorite staff of sassy baristas to get life advice from, and Veronica certainly isn't shy about giving advice when asked, but it wouldn't be "parenting" in the involved sense of raising your offspring for 18 or so years.

Jim struggles to keep Sam under control despite being a pretty firm, take-no-nonsense dad. I wonder if Veronica's dom voice would do the trick with her...

Nah, vanilla just means plain, ordinary, original, unmodified, basic, standard, and so on. Some people have a problem with that to different degrees for different reasons (I generally don't prefer the original version of any given food, Jeph gets bird tattoos, etc.), and it can get equated with boring or uninventive, but in general it is a neutral term.

The best vanilla ice cream I've ever had by a good distance is the Kirkland brand from Costco.

Vanilla ice cream is great!

The term "vanilla" as I know it refers to anything unmodified/plain/normal. When playing video games there is often a difference between people playing the game "vanilla" or playing a largely modified version.

Note that the introductory statement is only in reference to ice cream. I am not talking about anything else. I'll neither speak about, nor confirm or deny any preferences in other topics.

Make sure you don't confuse vanilla (aka ASOP-ish,  as-google-intended android) with stock Android (aka,  unmodified, out-of-the-box software).

People throw around the term "stock android" and it's often not used correctly.

Well on a Nexus device, the "stock Android" is "vanilla Android", so I suppose it's accurate there.

One other nuance I enjoy about using "vanilla ice cream" as a metaphor for "plain": many other ice creams have a bit of vanilla in them as well. By itself it's one of the finest flavors, but it serves as a baseline for other, perhaps experimental flavors that might not be to everyone's taste. (Sure chocolate, but also neopolitan, rocky road, strawberry, chubby hubby, pistachio, mint chocolate chip, etc)

So IMO the metaphor works best when the subject being compared is just fine in its "vanilla" version, and can become something spectacular when extended or enhanced by creativity, even if that spectacularity is only fully appreciated by a small minority.

I don't intend the use of the term as a pejorative but I can see where someone into a "non-vanilla" scene might think to use it that way to derisively to describe someone who has never bothered to expand their horizons, especially if the vanilla person was hostile to whatever kink was involved.

It is in a way the most ordinary ice cream.

Reminder that the saying has nothing to do with actual ice cream:

"Vainilla is from the diminutive of vaina, from the Latin vagina (sheath) to describe the way the pod must be split open to expose the seeds."

The link next to Search always says the name assigned to the Google account you are currently using. For example, mine says +Jonty.

This could mean one of two things:
1) Veronica is using someone else's Google account.
2) Veronica has another pseudonym, ending in 'ph'. Steph? Jeph??
3) The Jeph we know is and has always been an alias of Veronica Reed. Think about it. Have you ever seen her and Jeph in the same room together?

So vanilla sex is any sex that involves a vagina?

In the same sense that one might say "Intercourse in the missionary position for the purpose of reproduction" to describe lack of variety from what is common. Not literally that.

In any case I find it a largely useless term with loads of personal bias from whoever says it with regards to sex/romance. Less so in regards to unmodified applications, which I use it for too, but etymologically that's a weird use. :-P

No, 4chan doesn't rage, it engages in mock horror at the perversion of consensual heterosexual sex in the missionary position. It's sometimes surprising how a mass of nameless and anarchic individuals can invoke the same false attitude for the sake of comedy without any breaking character.

  • The distilled essence of Mr. James Beam himself.

We have some pretty bizarre abilities when it comes to adaptations.  Food's just part of it.

Plenty of animals make their homes / nests.  We have architecture and interior design.

Many animals migrate for more comfortable living conditions.  We have heat and central air.

Many animals travel great distances.  We used other animals to travel, then invented vehicles.

Our adaptations tend to go the extra mile.  That includes food - if it can be made edible, we'll eat it!

Hell, even if it can't, we'll find a way...

You want a weird adaptation?
Plenty of species have external digestion; flies, fungi and bacteria being the principal proponents.
Humans however are, thus far, unique in having partial external digestion as a cultural artefact; we call it cooking.

In much of the world, and certainly in East and South East Asia, it is the continued ability to digest lactose beyond childhood that is unusual. You milk-drinkers are the mutants. Literally. I am lactose-intolerant, as are about 95% of Chinese people. Ice-cream lovers of the world should consider themselves fortunate that they don't have to compete with with us!

if i recall correctly, the mutation for lactose tolerance is known to have occurred 4 times, independently in separate human populations around the world. in each case this was followed by a massive population boom, as consuming milk allowed for better nutrition into adulthood.
