Steam summer sale and trading cards
« on: 11 Jul 2013, 12:47 »

As of today, the Steam Summer Sale has kicked off, and in addition to the usual fare of a lot of games for not a lot of money, they've introduced a little meta-game to the service in the form of trading cards.

Basically, if you are playing a game through Steam you have a chance of receiving a trading card. You can sell these for steam wallet credit through the market, essentially turning your game time into store credit. You don't even need to play it, leaving it idling in the background is enough. That's where the story ends for those of us who are only interested in free (pretend) money.

(click to show/hide)

So far I've gained about €10 in Steam bucks that I can put towards new games, and exhausting all of my games for card drops took about three days, during which I had them running in the background. Not too shabby, if you ask me.

So, anything you'd like to get from this sale? Remember that if there's something you're planning on buying, don't get it until it shows up in a daily deal or a flash sale, and get it on the last day otherwise.

interesting!  I'll have to log into steam and take a look. Glad Bioshock: Infinite is on sale, would love to give it a whirl!

Bioshock: Infinite is actually cheaper on greenmangaming.com if you apply the coupon GMG20-F202F-UI40F. ;)

Today is a good day. The new Civ V addon was released and from what I can tell so far, it is awesome. Then Civ V goes on Sale and I can get the Gold Edition Upgrade for a mere 2,50€, so now I have all DLCs too!

*drags self out of Steam Market* fucking...auction house...jitters...

On a side note, I've managed to make a little money! Not any *actual* numbers, mind, I'm playing for pennies here, but it does remind me of some of the occasional fun times during the Warcraft years.

I'm getting flashbacks to Neopets. Resellers, price sniping, artificial inflation, I'm seeing every trick in the book.

I'm not going to bother with selling any cards other than my own. I bought a mystery card yesterday and I tried to sell it when it turned into a summer getaway card, but the market was being overloaded with them so every time I mananged to get mine listed, the price had already gone down too far to be competitive. Now it's only worth a third of what I paid for it. Pity, but it's not real money anyway.

I'm starting to wonder what could motivate someone to actually consume the trading cards in order to craft badges when the alternative is just selling them for store credit. I suppose you could gamble on getting those booster packs if you craft enough badges to increase your Steam level, then sell those, but that doesn't really get you a reliable return of investment.

I bought all the Just Cause 2 DLC for less than €2. I normally wouldn't touch DLC as insubstantial as an extra gun or an extra car, but since it's cheap and it doesn't cost me anything I figure why not.

Just Cause 2 by itself is also totally worth getting at that price. It's fantastic if you treat it as a cheesy action movie simulator.

Haven't used RPG maker since RPG Maker 2000 and xp, so I can't say for sure. That being said, if putting together an RPG even though you know nothing about programming, art or sound sounds like fun, then RPG Maker is the way to go. It's a great tool.

Of the games I bought, I've mainly been messing around with the Just Cause 2 DLC. The other games require dedicating at least an afternoon or evening to them, and I have way too much work to do to allow myself that.

I also dipped in a game of UT2004. Holy shit I suck at this game now.

As for the sale, the only thing I really, really want to see discounted now is Zeno Clash II. Everything else can wait.
