Black Sword:
Why is it that the sentence "We need to talk" can inspire such universal terror? Lord knows that when I hear or read it, I automatically reach for a tower shield and plate mail.

jwhouk:
You're forgetting something: The basement.

Yes, we had that joke a few weeks ago about it being the "home of spiders" and everything, but Dora had discussed possibly putting a restaurant or something down there.

Perhaps that's what Dora wants from Faye - someone to run the shop either upstairs or downstairs.

Possibility: Dora has Faye run the coffee shop while Dora runs the cafe downstairs. Hanners and Cosette work with Faye while Raven and Penelope help Dora with the cafe - which she names something weird, like "Dungeon Cafe" or "Cafe of Doom".

Zebediah:
Spider Zone Bar and Grill

--- End quote ---

It's the word 'need' in there. It implies that it is something necessary but unpleasant to do. If it was a happy conversation, you would want to talk, not need to. That, and social conditioning that 'We need to talk' usually precedes bad news.

ankhtahr:
And another important factor I see in that phrase is that it's used to announce something important. If it was something trivial you want to talk about, then you could just say it, without announcing it beforehand. That gives you a bad feeling. It's almost like a very light version of asking somebody to sit down before saying what you want to say. It's like "Brace for impact".
