Yes, tail-rotor-less designs have been around since the beginning of helicopters. The "egg-beater" style of the Fletner probably reached its most developed form in the designs of Kaman, an American company. I don't know why, but the concept has always appealed to me, though the video illustrates one of its drawbacks; it is unsafe to approach or exit from the aircraft's sides while the rotors are turning..
