In any case, in that video, it didn't seem like they were distracted from their job, although someone I linked it to suggested that the engineers may have been meant as representing JAXA and NASA (googling, it seems that they're fictional) rather than individual engineers, and showing their tsundere relationship.
And then, selecting the genders... male/female would create a power dynamic that they really wouldn't want, female/female would treat female engineers as something to be accepted as normal and not have that toxic power dynamic. (And, yes, I suspect they considered the target audience, that they assumed wouldn't be into a male/male relationship.)
