Tai is not, and should not have to be, Dora's therapist. What she did was carefully deflect something she probably recognised as a potential serious problem so that the conversation could be defused and continue without drama. It wasn't exactly the time or the place to have a deep in-depth conversation about Dora's insecurities, really.

No she is a friend, and a lover.  THIS IS WHAT FRIENDS DO.

Difference between a true friend and a therapist is a true friend doesn't charge you.      At least that's what I've found over the years.

Friends are supportive and caring but they aren't required to sit down and talk out every single issue every time it comes up. A therapist's sole job is to help someone talk though the things which are problems for them, and be an uninvolved sounding board. Tai's role is much more complicated and she's got legitimate self-interest. And really, is it a bad thing that she's navigated the conversation into a place where Dora can feel confident in Tai's feelings for her, and where the mood is light and positive, instead of dwelling on negatives and possibly getting into an argument which would make Dora's issues worse?

I've been put in the position of trying to be a therapist for a friend who would, in other circumstances, have been a lover, and it destroyed our relationship.

If Dora were to still have the same crippling insecurities as she used to... then at this point, she wouldn't be angry with Allie, she would be taking her insecurities out on Tai... like she used to do with Marten.

edit for further thoughts:
My initial impression of Allie is not exactly positive.
I interpreted the smirk to mean: "I've seen Tai with a lot of fuckbuddies. she sleeps around. a lot. this wont last, but good luck."

and I think if Tai and Dora had started having sex, we'd have seen a dance or two.
they're sleeping together, probably making out too... (which explains the "you haven't been bringing your A-game already?")

A good friend knows when to be your therapist and when to belt you upside the head and say "yo, you nuts bro."     Tai stepped up this time.   If this continues she may full well decide to put her foot down.   It's still too early to tell -- we got a couple of days before Das Cliffhanger.   ;)

  • What.

The obvious answer, of course, is that Tai's bedroom skills are going to purge Dora of her insecurities. Manually.

...okay, but being srs, someone brought up that if this situation happened with Dora & Marten, we'd probably be in a Fight Strip now, whereas with Tai this did not happen. I suspect this is more to do with the differences between Marten and Tai than with Dora's personal growth (though that is very likely also a factor): when Dora did her insecure thing with Marten, he tended to blow it off and/or get defensive about it in a "why can't you trust me" kind of way; Tai appears to lack this defensiveness, which means she isn't providing any fuel to Dora's fire and thus lead to a real fight. I don't know that I'd say this is because Tai's either a genius or an idiot, it's just who she is. Different values, different person.

Dora was right, when Tai brings her A-game, she's doomed!

That one was also unacceptable in itself, which is why I've removed it.

Why was it unacceptable? Tai has made similar comments herself. All considered, I'd be far more surprised if Tai is NOT into fisting, and at the very least it was a 'joke' fitting with the character and context of the current strip.

The way it was expressed was cruder than what I consider acceptable here; the presentation as an image macro emphasised this.  I've commented in the past that if the characters were on this forum they'd get moderated at times (Yelling Bird would be banned instantly, and Pintsize not long behind him), so the character twitters cannot be taken as a guide to the forum.

Possible, but the first response ("Did she? I didn't notice."), assuming it's genuine, seems to me less like it went over her head and more like she just didn't care/wasn't looking for it. She takes a molehill for a molehill, as it were, rather than the shadow of a mountain.

Everyone seems to be assuming that Tai's words in the latest strip were some kind of a clever, thought-out deflection, rather than a simple, straight-forward and honest reaction to what she'd been told.

Right, there's a difference between ACTUALLY defusing a situation and just not noticing it. Because whether you think there's a mountain or not, if the other person thinks there is, that's what matters.

Wait, so Allie knows something about Tai the rest of us don't?

Tai is in fact a bastard child to some eccentric Billionaire and she's plotting to crush Dora, marry Tai, and then claim that sweet inheritance money for herself by getting power of attorney over Tai after she puts her into a coma with some spiked protein shakes laced with insecticide.

I love how the forum debated countless widely-varying specific interpretations of exactly what Allie communicated to Dora with the smirk, and now we see that Dora actually doesn't know what it meant either!

I don't see any crisis in Dora & Tai's relationship happening here.  Dora's pissed at Allie for being rude to her (as most people get pissed when someone is rude to them out of the blue). Tai is cheerful and talking about sex (typical Tai).  No biggie.

If Dora were having a fit of relationship insecurities as with Marten, surely she'd be asking something about Allie's relationship with Tai ("who was that? how close were you?  what does she know about your bedroom skills?") instead of just complaining that the bitch smirked at her.

P.S. I want waffles with a 30oz coffee for breakfast.

My suspicion is that Tai did notice it and there's more to be revealed about Allie, which I'm guessing will happen once Tai gets back to the library. Either she'll talk about it with Marten, or Allie will be there. I'm thinking there was much more to their relationship than just hooking up. I doubt Tai would give her a-game to someone she was just randomly hooking up with. We have to remember that Tai's not exactly a stranger to relationship drama, so her deflect Allie's smirk and downplaying their relationship wouldn't be surprising.

On the plus side, this does provide a good example of Dora getting a handle on her control issues. She's delegating responsibilities at the shop and didn't fly off the handle when her girlfriend's ex looked at her funny. Progress! ^_^

I think Tais reaction to all of this is actually the right one.  She's not completely ignoring it, but she's downplaying the whole thing to calm Dora down and show just where her true attention is now that Tai is with her.

Well, a fair number of people are more comfortable being their most wild and crazy selves in the bedroom with casual hookups than with serious partners: it's safer, in a way, because if the hookup buddy can't handle it and rejects you, you haven't lost as much as if your true love has that reaction.

Or Tai might just be so gung-ho sex-positive that she'll bring her a-game to anyone who's ready for it, whether she's casual or serious about them...  and she's only been holding back with Dora because of Dora's clearly stated need to take things slow.

Still getting some insecurity issues from Dora, Tai obviously is joking around but Dora still seems bothered by the whole situation...

Dora does know that she will go to Marten to ask anyway, so something else must be going on which goes back to the whole insecurity issue...

Yeah, in contrast to her handling the Dora-outburst pretty well, trying to get Dora to compare her to her exes does not seem to be one of Tai's smarter moves... I hope they change topic soon.
