Parents keep child's gender secret

[serioustime]On the one hand, I see where they're coming from.

On the other, if you want to perform a gender identity experiment, use a consenting adult instead of a fucking child.[/serioustime]

OTOH, it's hard to do an experiment in upbringing using an adult!

I did what I could in terms of gender-neutral upbringing of my children; but not to the point of denying them the gender they undoubtedly had.

Parents keep child's gender secret

In the movie Monty Python's The Meaning of Life, the baby is born, the mother asks the doctor if it's a boy or a girl, and the doctor says "I think it's a bit early to start imposing roles on it, don't you?"  Played for laughs, but it made me think, which may have been the point.

It's an interesting "experiment" if that's what it is.

Eh, probably won't make a difference anyway. Babies are already androgynous by favor of evolution. By the time gender differences start to develop, children become more influenced by their peers and less by their parents, at which point most kids conform to the local societal norm.

I don't think they're "denying" Storm's gender, I think they're waiting until Storm is ready to identify as whatever Storm is. I think it's great what they're doing with their boys and am interested in what they're doing with Storm. I'm hoping it goes really well, but I can see how things could be difficult in the future. I hope there's an update in the future!

I mean, I am definitely a girl. I definitely like boys. But I never appreciated being called names when I played with "male" toys and dressed less feminine. Even now I'm a fan of messing around with androgyny. People put too much emphasis on gender instead of appreciating who a person actually IS. I kind of want to give that family a hug and a high five.
