For those with iPhones, there's an app called "Melodica" that does the same thing, with a few neat extra ways of customising the sound

a) that music program is absolutely amazing.
b) I think it would be even better if you had the option to save the sound clip you've created
c) it would be even better still if you could convert your sound to sheet music (I mean, that wouldn't be so hard it knows all the notes being played and the beats are all the same length)
d) Then this could continually be progressed into the realm of even more awesome if this was integrated with Conway's Game of Life. You draw up a pattern, and between every generation the music is played. That would be sooooo cool!

e) I feel like such a good musician playing with this, even though I'm not really.

There's a version of that here, along with drum machines, synths and effects. You can also save the songs (though this does need an account, free to sign up for I believe). It is incredible. It was originally linked a while back in the Music forum, back then it pretty much only contained one drum machine and one synth - I'm honestly staggered and how amazing this thing is.
