Yeah, some of the relationship stuff in the middle is more than a little iffy. Hendricks was only in 2/3 episodes of Firefly anyway.

Hendricks was in 14% of Firefly.

I feel like she had the beginnings of a recurring part, and a possible future as a crew member a season or so down the line. Whedon's stuff is soap opera-y (and awesome) like that.
