Manda, that's kinda like when I was meeting my bud for the first time in two years and him saying "I'll be wearing a black trenchcoat and slacks" and we met in the middle of goddamn Rosslyn Metro on a weeknight at 7pm. Needless to say, he found me first (Crip blue skinny jeans, black Converse with orange laces, and my SF Giants hat really stand out a lot more, and they constitute a typical outfit for me anyway).

Aaaaaaaand I just realized I dress like a jackass.

To be fair, I don't normally wear tweed, just for special occaisions, and the Tweed Run is an oh so special occaision, with free gin.

The ladies who own the two Ordinarys in shot won the Knutsford great race this year and I'm hoping to snare one of them onto the pedalcar racing team I'm on.

Always better to go for hardened lag.

When we entered Nepal from India a couple of years ago, we had to fill in visa forms on the way in.  They had a space for a passport photo, but as you don't happen to carry them everyone was ignoring that, and being let in without.  When my wife had gone through, they stopped me, and insisted I provide a photo, pointing at a booth nearby (apparently run by a grandchild or some similar relative!) which would do me one on the spot.  While I was having this done, my wife remonstrated with them, and they said they needed a photo because I "looked suspicious" - as if a photo of it would help!  The result was well calculated to reinforce that impression, though:

It looks better enlarged and cleaned up then the original does!

Also, picture from my passport when I was 25:

That stream is only about 40 yards from my house  :-( My fiance's father remembers the names of the coal companies that strip mined the area and ruined all the streams, but I can't recall what they were. They didn't do any cleanup, what a suprise.

It hurts my soul that there is flowing water with nothing living in it. It helps that we have a spring house with clean water, and a big cobalt blue crayfish lives there.

You may be able to do some remediation with powdered lime, if it's not still actively leaching too badly. Do some test strips first though, to see how much base it needs

Given the looks of the waterbottom, remediation might neutralize things a bit, but the heavy metals will still be there. IMO a better solution would be full excavation/redoing the stream. (Ofcourse, the soil will have to go to a depot, cause its just nasty). Have you asked your local council/enviroclub about this?

Verg, this is getting out of my expertise range but it's probably iron from the clay in the streambed rather than any mine leachate metals, if that makes a difference?

Iron would make the water have a colour closer to red. You can see some of that colour along the banks of the stream. Yellow is probably indicating the presence of sulphur.

Son, is this a spring that pops up out of nowhere, or is it just part of the stream? (If it pops up, the first few meters should be relatively clear due to a lack of oxygen in the springwater. After a few meters it turns murky and reddish due to the iron oxidizing.

I love that we went from utterly self-absorbed narcissistic portraits to environmental remediation advice in 2 posts.

On the environmental remediation note: you may be able to use one of those 'free test-your-home-water safety' kits to find out exactly what your heavy metal situation is without paying anything.

Or, you could get the organo-metal complex color tests yourself from various suppliers online.

http://www.sciencestuff.com/prod/Chem-Rgnts/C1686

This will help you test for nickel in ionic state, for instance.  With a bit of basic reagents (Phenolphthalein, lye, muriatic acid) you can stabilize the pH of the water and test with ionic indicators such as dimethylglyoxime to determine if various ions are present.  I don't think you're going to run into anything dissolved in the water (after filtration) that acts as a pH buffer so this should be pretty simple to do.

Call it nuts but it wouldn't be too expensive to get all the gear and make a hobby out of fixing the environment all by yourself!

Is baklava very hard to make?  It's one of my favorite desserts, but I've always been hesitant to make it because

(1) phyllo dough is a pain in the ass enough on its own, and covered in sticky honey I can only imagine how difficult it would be to deal with, and
(2) I am afraid that with the power to have huge quantities of baklava any time I want I will gain, like, a berjillion pounds overnight.

But what did you think about the process?  Where'd you get your recipe?  What did you think of the result?

We just snagged a recipe from allrecipes.com, made sure to buy phyllo dough from the supermarket (surprisingly Wal-mart failed us here, but both of the smaller, more regional chains we called had it in stock) and went at it. It really wasn't that difficult. Phyllo can still be a pain to work with, and when we first started out it was still a little frozen and stuck together, but by the time we finished it was like cake (you know... figuratively). I still don't think it's something I could be bothered to make every day, if only because I wouldn't keep a regular stock of phyllo, but it was fun and pleasantly more intuitive than I expected.

Note: the recipe we used doesn't call for honey until the end, and the melted butter doesn't make things too messy. Unless you mean it would be difficult to deal with while eating. In which case it is, kind of.

ALSO: The result? I say scrumptious.
