Nah, just an impending storm of geekery.
Gene, if you're using the standard rig that Flowtoys markets (yay watermelon!), we really should hang out sometime so I can reconfigure that set of poi to include swivels (allows for
orbitals) and maybe change the tethers to
Colecord (which is just flatly superior to other options in my opinion) and replace the double-loop handle with a counterweight handle to allow for throws. The stock flowpoi set is pretty sweet but it ultimately presents limitations because you just can't do certain moves with it. The handles detailed in
this video are basically as close to optimal as I can imagine (also, watch all this guy's videos, I know him personally and in addition to being a super cool dude, he's a really talented spinner and he generally explains himself extremely well when he's trying to teach a move ... although some background in tech spinning might be needed to make sense of a lot of it, and you're probably better off sticking with
the lessons on this channel for beginner and some intermediate stuff.)
I'm trying to transfer away from loop handles myself ... I still use them most of the time (both my fire poi setups still have double-loop handles), but I'm beginning to run up against their inherent limitations and I'm pushing myself to switch. It'll be a little while before I've stopped using them entirely but the freedom to throw and catch the poi, something I haven't really explored yet, is just too tempting to ignore (also, spiral wraps are easier if you hold your poi between your thumb and palm instead of with your first 2 fingers).
