Also, seriously? The reason I am not a professional trainer or instructor is because of how much money they make. For each horse, there is probably only one person who makes shit tons of money, and it really does not pay THAT well. The [owner of the] winner of the Kentucky Derby gets $2 million, a blanket of roses, and bragging rights. Most horses do not win more than one major race, although they may place well in others. In fact, the last time a single horse won all three races in the Triple Crown was in 1978 with Affirmed, the most famous being Secretariat in 1973. Neither went on to do as well after that.
Yeah, $2m seems like a lot of money for one race, but I think the Derby has the biggest purse for stakes races, I don't know of any competitions that offer comparable purses, AND horses are really fucking expensive. The last stable I worked for was spending $500 a month on feed for 12 horses, and that was with no additions and just shit bargain brand (essentially the equivalent of dry dog food). Add in vet bills, tack, paying the grooms and the trainers, facilities maintenance and upkeep, and property taxes for all that land and it starts to add up. After taking what I know of expenses and basically tripling it for quality (minus property taxes cuz I don't know nothin bout that), Double Eagle Ranch probably spent around $350,000, give or take, on Mine That Bird for a single year before he won the Derby. I am not saying it isn't a lucrative position, but I don't think the margin is as wide as you think.
Edit: whoops numbers
