Buttflaps that button don't sound too comfortable. Besides, any time you need to pop a squat you should be able to find shelter, unlike the pioneers. I would suggest you get long johns new, by the way. In case you couldn't guess.

I almost remember the name of another discount outdoor clothing store that I remember having an online store, but I can't remember. I'll ask my mom, she was the one that mentioned them to me the first time.

put snowpants, blankets, snowboots and a shovel in your car for winter! Also it wouldn't hurt to put some trail mix, candles, matches, and black garbage bags (they are good for retaining heat and being waterproof)

And a first aid kit is probably good too, if you don't already have one. I've used mine several times. Reflective roadside signs for if you need help, too. And jumper cables, if you don't already have those for some reason.

Honestly, I just carry a first aid kit, small folding shovel, space blanket (with blaze orange outside, so it is good for catching attention in emergencies), fleece blanket, and jumper cables. Out of those, I have used the first aid kit, fleece blanket, and jumper cables. Don't let us freak you out by listing stuff to get, odds are you won't need it. I would still get it, though.

Trail mix actually could be important to carry around on your person during the day, depending on what your job is. Your body burns calories like crazy when you are in the cold, especially when you are working in the cold. If you want to save money, you can buy a bunch of peanuts, cashews, raisins, dried cranberries, M&Ms, pretzels, and anything similar to that, mix it up in a big bowl, and fill ziploc bags with it. Just keep water with you too, it can be really dry and salty.

Man, who knew that what I learned on school hikes would actually end up being useful one day?

I was once opposed to the man cardigan but frankly, they've grown on me.

They come in myriad varieties so choose carefully but with good judgment you can safely wear a thin cardigan over a T-shirt (V-necks have a nice effect here) in place of a sports jacket.

I just assumed that's what he meant.

Also, a nice, white button-down formal enough to wear with a jacket and tie but cut so that you can wear it untucked is perhaps the most versatile top.

so now that i am nearing my mid-20s and most of my graphic tees from my teenage years are starting to get pretty old and smelly and generally fall apart i figure it's as good a time as any to start updating my wardrobe and looking like a little bit of an adult. i don't really know how to dress myself so i was just gonna follow allison's advice from a few pages earlier with regards to future clothing purchases, which i thought was pretty solid -

Buy a couple of decent button-down shirts in solid colours, a cardigan, a casual blazer, some decently-fitted t-shirts without logos/text on them. Buy some khakis, slacks, nice jeans. Mix and match, you're done.

unless anyone has anything else to add? i want to look like a smart and well dressed person but keep in mind that i am also definitely more dudey than girly and comfort is pretty important to me.

You can find all of those things that are still comfortable. My rule of thumb is to always have one pair of nice dress pants in each brown and black (I don't like navy, but you could also do that) and also maybe grey, because grey goes with everything. Also get some decent shoes that can be dressed up or down in black and brown (or grey or navy or anything neutral) and you're set!

she basically hit everything yeah. for me though i swap out nice blouses and sweaters for button down shirts, but that is only because i can't actually wear button down shirts unless i get them tailored and even then they make me look way too top-heavy. it's either tons of gaps, way too big everywhere else, or porn star. my body type is just not meant for them, i guess.

Thinking about buying one of two sets of boots:
These

or these

The first ones are currently on sale, but still only $50 less than the second ones.

Well, dovey (or anyone else), if you can suggest to me some boots that don't have any or very visible zippers, are one color (dark brown or black) and under $200, I'd probably buy them. I just want some nice boots that are fairly winterproof.

Tania basically to upgrade my wardrobe I have gone from wearing comic t-shirts and chucks and jeans and hoodies, to nice cotton blouses and flats with jeans and cardigans or a blazer. It does wonders for making you look grown up but still casual. I think. Anyway.
I don't have any occasion ever to dress up any more than that, although I do have an old pair of unwrinklable grey dress pants shoved in the bottom of my drawers just in case. Add your blouse and blazer to that and you're business casual, baby.

Tania it's a Canadian company so I'm pretty sure they'll have a store in Vancouver, but I bought all my office-y clothes at a place called Ricki's. It's business casual but most of their stuff fits well and they have all sorts of sizes and lengths of pants and skirts. Most things are machine-washable and really very durable. Some things are pricier than others, but it's really worth it. If you have a problem with any of the stuff you buy, they'll return it. Even after you've worn it. Their policy is "no sale is ever final".

As distractions from contract law goes, that was not the best (also that is not true! Sales are completed at a certain point, I just can't quite figure out where that point is right now... why did I not take english?).

Guys, due to scum-like behaviour of bag thieves I am in the market for new clothes, particularly dresses, particularly pretty dresses. I need at least one warm winter one and a pretty dress for formal dinners. Any ideas? Just for a sort of starting point.

I would hate to work at a store with that policy. I had bad enough problems with 90 day returns with or without a receipt for a store credit. People get really angry!

Edit because I posted something in the wrong thread.

They also match my new bike. I got her yesterday, she is the most fun ever and my girlfriend named her Lily.

That bike is the best thing, and also looks like it has none of the following:
  • Broken pedals
  • Broken gears
  • Broken lights
  • Squeaky brakes
  • Hard plastic saddle

Also it has the best kind of basket AND a luggage rack. GOOD DECISION.

on an other note: I bought boots, I think they're alright, but I doubt they're up to the fashion thread standard of boots. Mainly because it's actually possible to fold them into hipster boots. You will see when I care enough to take pictures.

i'm in the market for a pair of boots for this winter, too. now that i live in a fairly temperate area i don't have to worry as much about braving freezing cold winters and mounds of snow but the downside is that i do need something that will get me through some pretty cold and wet weather for a few months. the problem i always seem to have with boots is that, despite my relatively tiny frame, i have for real got the biggest calves of anybody on earth to the point where i seriously can't even put on any boot that comes up past my ankle unless i can find and order them in some sort of special "wide calf" size (which as you can probably guess does wonders for your self esteem). because of my very sad affliction i don't know anything about boots. my tentative plan was to just save up and get a black pair of docs for the winter but increasingly i feel like this is a really, really uninspired and lame thing to do on account a) i already have a pair of docs and b) there is probably a lot of cool stuff in the category of all-purpose black boots that i am just totally aware of.

where are good places to shop for boots! specifically, where are good places to shop for boots for women like me who have unbelievably massive calves.

Oh man the brakes squeak so much and the gear hub is a bit stiff but I don't even care BECAUSE SHE'S SO PRETTYYYYYYY

Check to see if the brakes are properly toed-in. Basically squeeze the brake lightly and if the front edge of the brake pad touches the rim you are good. If not, you might have to adjust the brake pad.

If adjusting the brake pad doesn't work, you should clean the rim and the brake pads. You might also want to roughen up the surface of the brake pads using an emery board or sandpaper.

Hub gears are pretty tough to do DIY repairs on. They fall outside the limits of my expertise. Sorry.

Hope this helps!

my winter boots. soooo functional (I spend a lot of time walking through snow). I think they look good on girls and guys, everyone tells me I look cute when I wear them with black tights and a skirt or skinny jeans. at the very least, they look super rugged, and if you live anywhere with real weather people are like "oh, she's wearing those boots because she likes dry feet." I actually really like the ones that are dark brown, but mine are perfectly broken in. the only downside is that I often get mixed up because everyone in my family has them!

i actually have no idea what docs are like for winter, i bought mine at the beginning of summer but they're the only pair of boots i own right now cos i didn't have the space to take anything else with me when i moved. i guess that's as good an argument as any to spend the next couple of weeks really looking for something built for cold and wet weather.

Nope, that's totally still the case.

They're fine in New York winter (it barely snows most years and when it does it melts before it hits the ground and turns into nasty slush) but when I was in Boston a lot last year I busted my ass at least half a dozen times on black ice and eventually the sole actually tore and I had to get new Docs.

If you're walking through snow that has been salted, the salt will destroy your shoes. That's how I lost my first pair of boots. Really, it's best to get a pair of boots that are meant for snow or water. Snow shoes or heavily lined rain boots work, but I don't know how good they'll look, but hey, your feet will be dry.

Actually, it's because he's Norwegian, and snow isn't slippery in Norway like it is here (actually, that's largely true, but I won't bother to go into it).

Tania, get yourself a pair of Hunter or Tretorn rubber boots. They're trendy, comfy, and functional. Tretorn is my preference, as they have matte finishes, and they offer faux-fur lined boots for winter!

Actually, it's because he's Norwegian, and snow isn't slippery in Norway like it is here (actually, that's largely true, but I won't bother to go into it).

What? Please do go into it! I would assume it has to do with what kind of winters we get, though? Winter here often means glazed streets (both Trondheim where I go to uni and Bodø where I'm from), but both cities tend to have not very cold winters (with last year as an exception…). However, if one were to move a bit further south in the county, they tend to have ridiculously low temperatures, and I'd assume it's less slippery there, since it's never warm enough to melt and then freeze again. Either way, if snow isn't as slippery here, shouldn't Jens be less good at not falling?

I still haven't found particularly non-slippery boots or shoes, but some are worse than others, like, say, chucks with wool socks. But I've gotten pretty skilled at not falling even though I'm so close lots of times. Maybe one gets used to it – they're not particularly good at putting salt or gravel on pavements, stairs etc. until days after it is needed.

Ice itself has a reasonably decent coefficient of friction; the problem is that water is an extremely good lubricant on ice.  So where the temperature is well below zero, there is no major problem; but when it hovers around zero, going over and under while the snow and ice remain - which is characteristic in British winters - the layer of water on the ice makes it extremely treacherous.  Even where the temperature is just a couple of degrees lower, things are better - but a slip once started can be as bad, because the heat from the rubbing is enough to melt a layer of ice and provide the lubricating water.

It's snowed for like, a week here in the past 2 years, so I'm reasonably sure I'm safe. But if we get even a couple inches here in Seattle everybody panics and the entire city shuts down. Coming from Chicago, where four feet wouldn't even cancel (or delay) school, it's an adjustment.

Then again, sledding down 1st Ave and passing a city bus that's on its side on the sidewalk is pretty awesome.

I love the winters in NW Washington. They are shitty (but not THAT shitty, usually) and everybody panics and it really makes a fantastic spectacle

plus, if there is enough snow, I can't even leave the house so...that's pretty fun, in it's own way.

Also I would like to point out that the combination of Sailor Moon and faux-Kerouac / Sonic Youth spelling is perhaps the purest distillation of what this forum is that we have yet been presented with.

Snow is awesome when you can spend all day pulling stranded motorists out of the snow on christmas eve/day.

Heh, all of the UK shuts down when there is about an inch of snow.

Edinburgh becomes unwalkable because there are no precaution measures at all and everything turns into ice after two days.

Johnny,

Man, I was in Glasgae for Hogmanay last year and it was terrible because the pavements kept thawing during the day and re-freezing at night.

That reminds me that I still need to get some boots. Damn.
