I know this probably doesn't fit in the fashion thread, but you mentioned new office chairs, and I have to share this thing:

My dad used to work at a place that had one of these that I'd monopolize whenever I went in to work with him. It may look funny, but it's like sitting on a super-comfy pogo stick. I.e.: AWESOME

Flip flops would be good for a really casual look, but if you want to take it a step up, something like this would work well:

[picture]

From Payless, naturally, but they come in black as well, which would look good with the dress.

I had those and they are really really comfy. Bad thing was one of the heel straps popped out and I tried to fix it, but now the back of one of the shoes is loose and I can't wear them anymore, wah.

Amanda, I think you can get away with wearing that dress with the sandals you wore in another photo.

Not that this is pressing, but I'vr decided that when my hair grows out a little bit, I wanna go all 80's. The first things that come to my mind when I think 1980-89 are spandex, parachute pants, and westcoast hardcore, none of which I really wanna rock. So how did like, normal people rock the 80's? What can I wear that will be nticavly of the decade without screaming "Trying Too Fuccin Hard?" I am thinking tight white and black 501's, but other than that I got nothing.

I recently got a laptop and I'll be taking it to university with me, with the intention of using it quite a lot. The problem is I don't have a proper case for it, just a thin black canvas shoulder bag which will be less than useless in terms of protecting it.

I would like to find a nice, preferably solid case for it but I want it to be pretty and elegant. I had a very quick look on google but I couldn't find anything I wanted. Any ideas?

The most common '80s fashion trend for men was basically to combine casual items with things that were previously considered conservative. Miami Vice style crap is an obvious example, but the exaggerated preppy look was also fairly popular in the '80s and if modified can be a lot less stupidly obvious than trying to pull a Don Johnson (skinny tie would also be too obvious). A pair of (by current standards, at any rate) tight jeans, the right haircut and a polo may be enough to get you where you want to go without being too garish. Preppy stuff in general seems to be fairly common right now anyway, so when I see old pictures of family from the '80s it's the fit and haircuts that I notice more than anything, since '80s silhouettes seem kinda top heavy in general. There's a lot of slightly too big shirts with rolled sleeves and tight pants in those old pictures.

Kieffer, I thought that the 80s was already played out as a fashion concept.  Although, if you want to take a fairly mainstream (over here, at least) concept and try to make it good then I wish you godspeed and all that jazz.

My suggestion is to look at Kurt Russell from that timeframe.  You already look kind of like a more slim-faced version of him, so if there's anything he wore from back then that catches your eye I'm sure it'd work on you too.

Yeah, the things I was thinkin' in my head would all be classified as "top heavy" as well. Like a too big blazer with shoulder pads with the sleeves rolled up, acid washed jeans or those ones that just had a bleach pattern on them and teased to shit hair.

I did find some pictures here of some model, it is supposed to look like an 80s yearbook photo but the style of the clothes you can tell is definitely 80s but kinda toned down.

I was (and still am) a fan of the understated punk kinda thing from the 80's which is pretty similar to where you're going with the 501s and tight t-shirts. Just add Doc Martens, a leather jacket, and you're there.

Hello fashion thread! This was me today:

The lighting and the phone-cam have messed up the colours summat... the shirt is probably my favourite shirt, because it works well in a lot of outfits, and even (or particularly) when it's unironed. I also like to think it looks sweet with my summer tan, and also shows off my hairy manly chest and bling nicely [when I'm not holding my arms straight out in front of my like Frankencamp's Monster] but I won't ask you to judge the truth of this =P

Shirt + cardigan + jeans = under 42 USD, three different sales in three different years. Went with a pair of black flipflops I bought in Toronto... bloody cheap, but ridiculously comfortable. Bag and hat similarly cheap, very serviceable, and probably also bought in different sales in other years. Accessories include my battered silver[y] pinky-ring (present from a good friend), my gold chain (present from my great mum :)) and my summer saunter.

Lesson: it pays to build up a versatile wardrobe over time. Bloody satisfying anyway!

How does North America and the UK feel about rolled-up jeans? :) pretty common here, and it's so comfortable in the summer... but I've met guys who think any leg-length between knees and and ankles = the girliest of capris.

Yeah I'm not feeling the rolled-up jeans. Everything else is a-ok but as soon as I saw those my face fell a little. On the other hand I don't really like any pants that are not full length trousers and I only wear shorts when I have no other options (aside from death by overheating).

I actually like rolled up jeans, but I think it looks better when the cuff is wider. I like your outfit in general though, the orange looks nice!

Thanks =) I still remember the day I realised colours that weren't navy or black belonged in my wardrobe, and orange has become my favourite of colours :D

I think a wider cuff would look better as well, but they end up hampering my movement or making the legs too long (= less comfy, and I get less sun on them too) :(

Jimmy, man, I really don't like wearing shorts in public most of the time... I think it's a common guy thing, where you just hate your legs and esp. your knees. Stupid knees, there's just nothing you can do about them besides hiding them.

Looking for a hat suggestion!

I ride a motorcycle as frequently as I can (weather permitting, of course) and I need a portable hat to cover up my helmet hair.  I have a fedora which I like very much, but it's not portable.  I have a standard baseball cap, which is okay, but especially getting off a motorcycle and pulling off my helmet, I feel like I've just finished a race and now have to wear a sponsored hat.  Here is a picture of my face, though it's kind of old and I can't get a new one.  The changes are my soul patch is longer (down to chin) and I now have thicker, square-framed glasses (dark coloured).

Knit skullcap. It's not really fashionable but it's convenient as hell and it's hard to pull off anything more formal after a good ride anyway.

Step one, lose the soul patch. It is not helping.

Two, choose something like hat #1 or hat #2. Fedoras are much too overplayed, if that makes sense. Everyone seems to be wearing one. Though I suppose a lot of people are wearing the hats I posted but I just like them better than a fedora.

This is my opinion.

The soul patch stays.  It's far too amusing to get rid of it.  I've tried hat #2 and it just doesn't really fit my face.  Would hat #1 bounce back after getting scrunched up in my jacket?  Also, do I have to be emaciated with a beard to truly pull it off?

I have a hat that's pretty similar, just a bit more shallow, and it hasn't been damaged by spending most of its time shoved into bags so it'll probably be fine.

Oh...

I'm not looking for a complete makeover, I just want an idea for a hat, and to that end, I'll give hat #1 a try.  As for the beanie/knit cap, I think it's a bit too hot for good summer days.

I would suggest a fedora!

But I can't take the fedora with me on my bike!  I have a fedora, but it can't be worn with everything, nor can it survive compression.

Then the first hat Liz posted would be best, then, if you're going to be wearing under a helmet. (If the brim fits under it.) Also, if you don't mind a knit hat, if you get one that is knit in cotton, it shouldn't be too hot. (Definitely stay away from wool ones for summer.)

I'll not be wearing it under a helmet, because it won't fit.  I'm wearing one of these:

I'll be compressing it by stuffing it into my jacket, or strapping it on my luggage rack.

I have a fedora-ish hat that would be perfect for that sort of thing. Shame I'm not willing part with it.

I was going to suggest the second hat liz linked, since I have one that I wear almost all the time, and it fits in my pocket. Otherwise, maybe just a skullcap.

Alternately: sombrero.
