Man I will be so glad when fedoras go back out. They make 95% of wearers look like twits who just had a hot topic shopping spree.

I think they make people look more like hipsters than hot topic kids, but is there much of a difference these days?  I haven't seen a Hot Topic in years so I don't know what stupid trend they're on.

Eh, I guess that's about right, though.  When I shopped there (*gasp*), they were on things that I legitimately liked, such as popular metal bands (Metallica, Black Sabbath, etc).

It will come into fashion soon, you'll see. You'll all see!

Keeps my head warm, too.

Bassist, they still do have that stuff, they just also have a bunch of twilight stuff that makes me tempted to commit arson. I usually end up going in there when I'm hanging out with friends at the mall, they never seem to have anything that I really want, though. I would prefer to buy shirts off the internet that I really want rather than ones from a store that I kind of like. And for some reason, they don't seem to have any Clutch, CoC, Crowbar, Agalloch, Acid Bath, Sculptured, or Metal Church shirts.

All these bands make actual music....

Speaking which fashion thread, I'm kind of in love with these shoes:

http://www.mr-shoes.co.uk/womens/productdetail.aspx?id=5883&cid=94&catid=79

(Note they are now on sale) I have always loved both zombies and 80's-ish thrash graphics as well as high heels, but I just can't decide if they are a wee bit too "Hot Topic".

I would probably wear them with jeans/plain black pencil skirt & either a black fred perry I have with the same couloured green piping or a band t shirt. Maybe slightly clashing ankle socks.

Help!

After a quick survey of the Hot Topic website, they have shirts of bands that make good music.  Only classic bands, though, so that they can be sure everyone has heard of them, but Ozzy, Iron Maiden, Megadeth, GnR and others (haven't made it through) have all made pretty damned good music.  Sure, they're not taking much risk by choosing bands that popular people might not accept are awesome, but it's not shit.

I take back any previous bad things I've said about Hot Topic (maybe not all of it) for these shoes. Useful & pretty. William Morris would approve.

I really like the shoes, but I saw a VERY similar pair in Hot Topic not too long ago.

Hot Topic is a good store, it's just the people who go in holding a 'how to be a scene kid z0mg' handbook and dress how they are told to don't have a brain. Hot Topic sort of gives them the resources to do so.

I can't trash a store from which I bought a $12 Flogging Molly v-neck and a Bob Marley hoodie for $21, though.
Being a smart shopper is shopping AROUND.
Just because Hot Topic has neon pink stripey horse-hair clip in extensions and press-on zebra print eyeshadow does not mean you have to buy it.

Don't hate Hot Topic, just hate the people who shop there and only buy Twilight and Burton shrines.

Those heels are fabulous. I would risk being 6'1"-6'2", especially if it was for a zombie crawl because then my feet could eat unsuspecting people.

That's actually really reasonable for scrap fabric, not cheap but not expensive, especially brand name or unique fabrics. I mean, even look at etsy http://www.etsy.com/search_results.php?search_type=supplies&search_query=scrap+fabric&order=date_desc&ship_to=

Yeah that is a little pricey for scraps but not massively so, plus you get their little 'zine'. I'd argue the term zine doesn't really apply and that it is a term used for it's marketing value but whatever.

hey fashionistas, i need your help again!

i have been trying out this thing recently where i wear things that aren't jeans or t-shirts. a couple of weeks ago i inherited a few summer dresses from my older sister, she bought them while she was in ghana doing an internship but now that she has a baby and also doesn't have malaria all the time they don't fit her anymore so she's decided to give them to me. it is very terrifying because although i think they are super pretty and awesome i have never in my adult life actually owned or worn a dress for anything unrelated to going to a wedding or graduating from some kind of educational facility and i don't really know what you do when you wear a dress. so here they are, and please excuse awkward faces/stupid poses as per usual.

they are a little big on me but i will alter them so that they fit, that is not the problem, the main problem is whether or not these are good dresses i look nice in and can actually wear around casually and stuff. and if they are okay, what can i wear with them? what kind of stuff do you wear with a dress to accessorize it or make it more interesting? i am so new to dresses it is not even funny, in the sense that it is a little bit funny but mostly kind of depressing and awkward. help me, fashion thread, help me pass for a reasonably goodlooking member of society.

I love the blue one!  It's also probably the most versatile in terms of what shoes could be worn with it / whether you dress it up more formally (heels, longer earrings, maybe a necklace that falls a few inches above the neckline) or more casually (flats or strappy sandals, some kind of dark blue sweater).

I like the cut of the first one a lot, but I'm never sure what to do with a print that's as visually arresting as that one.  I'd probably end up going with a pair of very low heels in the color of the geometric design (navy blue, I think?) and not accessorize any further.

For all of them, though, you might want to consider investing in a bracelet watch--something that's just a little less chunky than what you're wearing in those pictures, ideally in a silver or gold color so that it doesn't clash with things.  They make really simple ones like this and girlier ones like this and classy-looking ones like this.

I kinda agree with Elizzybeth.  I like the cut of the first one, but am not overly fond of the pattern.  The blue one is super great, but the purple one I am not overly fond of for some reason.  The cut of it up top doesn't flatter you very well, and I don't really like the pattern on it all that much either.

I also love the blue one! It'd look amazing with a red cardigan and maybe some gold bangles.
If you want to wear it around casually, you might consider shortening it a bit? I don't know if it's just me, but I'm always put off wearing long dresses in day-to-day situations — they feel weird and formal and uncomfortable.

Also, I'd get belts to wear with the first and last ones, because the shapes aren't really all that flattering.

yeah belts are sort of what i was thinking too. part of the reason they all look a little long and shapeless is cos they are too big on me and also my sister is about 7 inches taller than me, but it's also that they are pretty loose and flowy whereas i am sort of curvy and funny looking and don't really have the right body type for that kind of loose flowy thing. i guess in terms of accessories i am also looking for ways to make them cute and flattering on someone who is short and has a small waist and a big butt. i adore the patterns on all of them, and they're all handmade and one of a kind so despite all the altering i will probably have to do i really want to give them all a chance.

If you want to make them cute but a bit less feminine either half vests or a long vest would look bomb as hell. The first one is the best and could look rad with a belt too.

Tania I have the same problem with a skinny waist and fat arse. I generally stick to things that are less of a sheath and more of an a-line or pencil-skirt cut. The second dress will conform to those better, but with some serious tucks and a belt the yellow could be a cute hourglass shape. The purple just looks frumpy, so I wish you luck with it.

Goddamn Tania. Goddamn. I too have been trying to wear something that wasn't jeans and a tshirt. I have recently been branching out into button-ups with the sleeves rolled up. Now, I am a sort of pale guy so I look best in dark colors. As we are going into the less hot season where I live, more places are selling long sleeved patterned button-ups. Should I go with various patterns (perhaps even adding a sweater-vest or some such) or just stick to solid colors if I want to wear something over it?

the first thing you need to do with the last 2 dresses is hem them in because the biggest problem with them is that they are a weird length and chop your legs off at an awkward place, which makes your legs look short and stumpy.  they would look great cut right above the knee imo.

the first dress could do with some dark dramatic accessories since it is such a pale neutral color (black, navy, dark purple).
i could see the second dress looking really cute with solid colored, chunky jewelery.
the last one is a bit shapeless but it's not a big deal.  if it's cut shorter and belted it will look really cute.

general advice:  belts are always awesome to accentuate a small waist and flatter curves when you're wearing something otherwise shapeless.  i like andy's vest idea, cardigans are also a great way to add layers to a simple dress (and like erin's dress that one time, they can take away some shapelessness as well).  since all those dresses are patterned, bold but solid colored accessories work best.

you know how old things come back into fashion sometime?

things that need to come back into fashion:
Tri Corner hats

petticoats

Bowlers

kilts (I am a firm believer that pants are over rated and need to be burned)

top hats

and what ever the hell these are called (petticoats again?)

If you lift your leg while you're sitting and cross it over your knee comfortably, it'd be just fine, I think.

I was thinking more along the lines chowburger was; opening someone else's beer.

Either way, eww platforms.
