I've met a lot of people who are completely oblivious to what they wear or simply do not give a shit but literally nobody has ever mentioned that they are wearing something to make themselves miserable.

However, many people wear clothes, when you reduce it down, to make other people happy.

To some degree, I wear clothes to improve other people's opinion of me.  This effect reciprocates with them treating me better, and as a result, I am happier.  Do I want them to like me?  I don't know, but it certainly improves my quality of life.

I also do enjoy looking good.

You are experiencing far too much friction in the crotch area. You require specially-reinforced jeans for awesome people.

Haha Khar shouldnt be giving advice, let alone fashion advice!

Anyway, its usually not worth the effort to find rad stuff at thrift stores. You might say Im wrong but most of the time the items are just not to be found, are ill-fitted or just plain the wrong size.

Whereas you buy new, you can get nice things EASILY.

And keep in mind, well dressed men and well dressed women tend to have different requirements. Women can add and subtract pieces of clothing to put together an outfit, whereas men typically have to start with a nice staple and accessorise over top of it.

Neither should you! I disagree with pretty much everything in this statement.

This weekend I got an amazing pair of heels, a pair of Fred Perry short-shorts & an amazing huge pait of sunglasses for £10. They all fit great.

Right now I'm wearing a cardigan that cost me £2.50 & is one of my favourite items of clothing. I can never find clothes I like in normal shops.

As for the nice staple part, ever heard of the Little Black Dress? I'd say that was a girls staple that is accessorised. Men & women have the same problems. Finding a really good pair of jeans, looking good when it's cold...

I agree with the jeans completely, but about cold, I'd argue the opposite.  I've never seen a guy look good in shorts, whereas I've seen many women look great in skirts.  But when it's cold, guys have tons of great options (at least for my particular style).  I constantly look forward to when it gets cold, because then I can start looking good without being miserable again.  Granted, a great pair of warm boots might not look the best (or at least I've not found any that don't look like I'm going hiking), but those can be removed when not having to trudge through snow.

Yes I do find Autumn (doesnt that leave a better feeling coming off your tongue than 'Fall'? Its like saying Film instead of Movie) is the ultimate fashion season. In winter you are to primarily concerned about keeping warm and are kind of locked down to one or two jacket/coats. And Spring is focused on the impending summer, everyone is racing to wear less. Then summer, well Im in Montreal, so it brings out the hottest kinds of girls in the shortest kinds of summer dresses, but really its all about wearing less, and less is not more when it comes to fashion.

Neither should you! I disagree with pretty much everything in this statement.

I feel as though you never quite read what I typed or those who came before typed. All little black dresses aside, women tend to wear a few more layers and own quite a few more shoes, as such their clothes while individually weaker, are more likely to hit a thrift shop intact. Mens shoes typically get worn until they expire for example, pants as well.

And if you can reliably walk in to a thrift shop and get nice stuff every time, all the power to you, but most people cannot, not would not, or dont, but CANNOT. Quite simply, if something is nice, why would it be in a thrift shop? You are looking for the accidents and the exceptions, of which depending where you are and how many other thrift shoppers there  might not be many of.

As well, its generally old fashion, and while new fashions are typically inspired by the fashions of about 20 years prior (bell bottoms in the 90's, florescent colours in the 00's, grunge in the 10's) they are also modernised. They will fit differently or are constructed differently. For instance, the bell bottoms of the 90's had low waists, yet the ones from the 70's had high waists.

Whereas you walk into a store selling new clothes, they will be fashionably current be it something new altogether, or an updated take on an old idea, but most importantly all the little details will be modernised as well.

And perhaps when I said accessories we just misunderstood, women tend to accessories with layers and additional clothing, men tend to wear fewer pieces then let headbands, or hats, or bandanas or chains or 'sneaks' or tattoos or piercings do the accessorizing. Women tend to accessories to make it part of a whole, an outfit the sum of its parts. Men tend to just add things on top of staples. Before you jump up and down calling me out, notice my liberal use of 'tend' or 'may' or 'typically', because there are always exceptions, but the greatest percentiles of each should be pretty accurate to what Ive stated.

As soon as I posted that I realised it was wrong....I love hats & coats & I tend to buy winter boots a size bigger and wear thick socks so they are hidden by foxy boots.

I really love hats. The only thing I can say with any arogance at all is I have never found a hat that didn't suit me/I couldn't pull off.

As someone who agreaa with the less is not more, I actually have a harder time in the summer, I not really a floaty summer dress person, I hate sandels/flip-flops. I just end up being warm in jeans, t shirt & ballet shoes. Work is even worse as I have to keep my legs covered due to them being tattooed & it's strict office dress. I boiled for the whole week of summer we had here.

In my workplace, we can't wear open-toed shoes or shorts, or hats (that last one is kind of flexible, I think), because of safety (it's a government lab, and the hats are actually for security).  Luckily, pretty much anything else goes as long as you keep it decent.

p.s.  I can never find anything in thrift stores that suits me, except that one time I lucked out with a tux.  I think that makes up for never finding anything the rest of my life, though.

Cheshire Cat, it also depends on the area where the thrift shop is located. If you are living somewhere where there are a lot of politicians or ambassador-y type people, or more wealthy people (an example is Canberra, Aus' capital, where all the embassies are), then there will be a whole heap of nice things in thrift stores. The foreign emissaries (or whatever they would be called) can't take all the clothes they have had to buy to be presentable in official situations back home with them, so normally a lot of those things go to the local charity stores. Wealthier people will send their old clothes to them as well when a new season rolls in.

Also, it also depends on people's tastes. I have given some perfectly good clothes to charities because I grew out of them, and in turn have picked up some really good clothes from various places that were there because I like certain clothes while a lot of people where I live don't. Saying "if something is nice, why would it be in a thrift shop?" makes it sound like you're saying that people only give shit clothes that they have worn until they are falling apart to charities, which they wouldn't accept, and sure as hell wouldn't be putting out to try and sell.

That being said, going op shopping is very hit and miss, and people have to remember that, like people have said, you have to be prepared to walk out of there with nothing a lot of the time. Plus, I think it is something you should do while a friend is there, because half the fun is rummaging through racks of clothes and laughing at the awful things until you find something nice or move on.

I say this as someone who has played for many hours on both sides of the fence. I *know* thrift shops, just as I *know* retail. And I can assuredly say, one of them is FAAAAAAAAR easier to consistently get nice things, and the other is FAAAAAAAAR cheaper.

Also I do find awesome finds at thrift stores still possibly because I like old gramma dresses and blouses and shoes and handbags and jackets

Okay, so I bought some dresses. I need shoe advice!

The dress ends just above my ankles and is made out of a super light cotton type flowy material. I have no idea what shoes to wear with it, but it needs to be dressy enough to wear to formal occasions.

This is the second dress:

This one I was thinking just plain black heels of some description, I probably have some. Not particularly sure what to do with my hair if I wear this one though.

The second dress is beautiful, you could maybe wear tan or chocolate or even dark red heels or flats, dainty ones with peeptoe. I like bringing out little colours in patterns rather than repeating the same block colours if I can! And wear a high ponytail.
I am not really sure about the first one, sorry.

The first one is pretty good! It looks very egyptian to me, so I would go with some thong sandals, like these or these. For heels I would go with something strappy, or gladiators, I guess, except I don't like gladiators so I won't recommend them. Maybe something like this? Or maybe just something lovely and simple like these.

The second one is gorgeous. What colours are in it, exactly?

Eh?  In the 70s I wore bell-bottomed hipsters.  (They were maroon needlecord Levis.)

This is the case for me! I'm such a 40's body shape, the dresses just fit me better. I find a lot of the clothes are better made, esp. the shoes, I also have tiny feet so find it super easy to find shoes I like. A lot of modern clothes, however stylish doesn't fit me as I have very large boobs but a tiny waist & small shoulders, whereas clothes as late as the early 70's just seem to fit. I think this is why I have more success, I'm also quite good at altering things, which helps!

Also sorry if my reply seemed harsh Cheshire Cat, it was ment to be jokey, but reading it back it doesn't seem that way, I guess I didn't really understand what you ment, but whilst I still disagree with a lot of what you wrote I get what you mean a little better, I'm sorry for not reading your post properly.

I don't think acrylic shrinks, though. But I guess you could try soaking it in hot water to see if that helps. Make sure to put it block (stretch) it out properly though, or it will shrink disproportionately.

I know you can't felt acrylic, but you may be able to shrink it- just get the hottest water you can. This sounds a little odd, but you can pop it in the dishwasher with no soap and run it on the "sanitize" or "pots and pans" setting, since dishwashers get stupid hot.

also, related to burning stuff: a friend threw up on a hot water heater once, the vomit steam burned her face. awesome!

I don't know why that concept never crossed my mind. I salute your genius.

I don't think it's generally considered a great idea, but I've done it successfully before

So guys, what do you think?  Oh, it's kind of musty.  Any way you can get rid of that?
