and what ever the hell these are called (petticoats again?)

I'm pretty sure petticoats are just the undergarment.  I'm not hugely up on Victorian fashion, but I think those are just gathered overskirts (possibly with a false rump or cage bustle or something?).

Speaking of outdated fashion and underwear, out of curiosity, do any of you girls wear slips under dresses (functional slips, not naughty lingerie)?  My mom always put slips on me when I was a little girl, and she wore them through the mid-90s, but I don't think I've seen anyone but my grandmother with a slip in ten or fifteen years.

I wore slips all through my childhood, only underneath nice dresses though, I haven't worn one since like 99 though

I wore slips when I was little, but I think they're not as necessary as they used to be since most dresses and skirts come lined already nowadays.

I wear petticoats, shorter though, they make skirts all spinney like! and have outfits with bustles that I've made myself.

My male house mate wears bowler & top hats out. He had the both handmade for him.

All those things are awesome.

I have a slip, but I only wear it with one thing, and that's my cream colored sweater dress. It's not really see through enough to show my underwear, but if it's even barely light out, you can see through the part that is between my legs, which is not cool.

I should get a slip because I keep seeing all these pretty old dresses and not buying them because they are see-through.
Also I have noticed a lot of bowler hats on cute girls recently.

Mai, I got mine at Le Chateau for 15 buxish. It is the most perfect thing but I am too shy to wear it on a day-to-day basis, I am going to try and wear it in the winter though.

I saw one at Target a few months ago, but was stupid and didn't buy it.

I only wear slips nowadays under jersey dresses because I don't know what it is about me and jersey dresses, but they just want to cling to my legs like crazy.

PS. I think the poofy dress illustration thing you're talking about is a bustle. Or a bedonkadress. Take your pick.

Most of them are, but every once in a while somebody messes up and either puts something nice on sale or makes something that's cheap good.  You have to be willing to wait and find the mess-ups.  As a result, it takes a while to build up a wardrobe of nice things.  It's so worth it, though.

Oh shit.  What I meant to say is, "I don't know anything about shopping, because I'm a guy."

Depending on where in the world you live thrift stores are full of goodies for prices like 1.25$ Usually it does mean sifting through truckloads of shit though.

With thrift stores, you really have to be prepared to go home empty-handed most of the time.  I've only ever had one find in a thrift store that wasn't for a costume, but lord was it a big one; a tuxedo.

To be fair I got this scarf today

For .99cents, with tax that's 1.15, that's 1.05 american. It is a very nice scarf. If you were buying this scarf you would have .15cents left over!

(1.25 is not a lot, I understand, but seriously you don't need to spend lots of money on clothes unless you want to, some items are worth the extra but if you don't have the extra you make due. Just don't assume all nice clothes are expensive! that's defeatist talk! Oh also that belt was 3 dollars and the shirt was 2.50, but the skirt was 28, see how it works sometimes?)

You are about one turquoise necklace away from fitting in as a southwest tourist there, andy. That being said, it is a very nice scarf.
Also, the only times I've found slacks in my waist size (28-30") have been at thrift stores. And I mean slacks that aren't just black.

Haha Khar shouldnt be giving advice, let alone fashion advice!

Anyway, its usually not worth the effort to find rad stuff at thrift stores. You might say Im wrong but most of the time the items are just not to be found, are ill-fitted or just plain the wrong size.

Whereas you buy new, you can get nice things EASILY.

And keep in mind, well dressed men and well dressed women tend to have different requirements. Women can add and subtract pieces of clothing to put together an outfit, whereas men typically have to start with a nice staple and accessorise over top of it.

No. People are incredibly cruel and judge so harshly based on your appearance that if I don't at least make some sort of attempt to dress according to social norms then I am treated like some sort of sub-human
I'll never judge another human being on something so trivial as their appearance.

I agree with Darryl on this one.  I remember going to a pretty nice store with one of my female friends and being amazed at how cheap everything was.

On the other hand, women's clothing is also not made to last as long as men's. Women are inclined to be the shoppers, and to keep them coming back most cheap women's clothing is designed to wear out to get them to buy more.

Eventually I'm going to invest in patterns and a sewing machine, make my own clothes, but until then I have to get by on being thrifty.

Haha Khar shouldnt be giving advice, let alone fashion advice!

What, exactly, is this supposed to mean, pray tell?

What if I like wearing nice clothes?

Then wear 'nice clothes'. If you like 'nice clothes' then wearing 'nice clothes' and wearing whatever makes you happy are, in fact, one and the same thing.

Okay wait, fuck this, everyone has to dress like Milan Fras.

The only person exempt is Karl Lagerfeld because I find his dress sense amusing.

But what if you like to wear nice things but can't afford to buy nice things? That advice only works up to a point.

Thankfully, owning lots of cheap shit makes me happy. I bought a brand-new dress today for five bucks — makes me feel a bit like an Avril Lavigne wannabe (plaid! corset back! sleeveless! ratty hems!) but eh.
